Chelsea Transfer News: Jose Mourinho Vows to Sign 2 or 3 Players, Latest Rumours

Nick AkermanMay 28, 2015

Jose Mourinho has suggested he will strengthen his Chelsea squad with "two or three" players during the summer.

The Blues manager spoke ahead of Chelsea's post-season friendly with the Thailand All-Stars in Bangkok, confirming he expects to make additions when the transfer window opens, reported by the club's Twitter account:

Mourinho is targeting players who can make a lasting impact throughout his second tenure in charge at Stamford Bridge:

However, he stressed that keeping the current squad together is his priority:

Chelsea finished eight points clear of Manchester City atop the Premier League, with many star performers combining to make a top-quality whole. Mourinho doesn't believe finding improvements will be easy:

Importantly, Mourinho expects anyone brought in to earn their place at the club. He suggests previous reputations mean nothing at Chelsea:

The club's failure to challenge for the Champions League can be marked down as arguably the sole annoyance of Chelsea's 2014-15 campaign. Mourinho wants to mount a successful challenge in Europe next season:

Reports currently link the club with an outrageous move for Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, a player who could soon see Gareth Bale become the "key man" at the Bernabeu if Rafa Benitez is installed as boss, reported by Matt Law of the Telegraph.

Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann is also touted for a switch to Stamford Bridge, per Jamie Anderson of the Daily Star. However, Chelsea could face competition for his signature, tweeted by B/R's Clark Whitney:

An ongoing battle to sign Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba continues to be discussed in the press.

Spanish publication AS (h/t Charles Perrin of the Express) reports that Real Madrid are ready to offer Pogba a "whopping contract offer" of £7 million per year to stop Chelsea, City, Manchester United and others signing the powerhouse youngster.

John Cross of the Mirror believes Benitez will make wantaway Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling one of his "first transfer targets" if he becomes Real boss, a situation that could also impact Mourinho's desire to sign the Englishman, per Perrin.

B/R UK's Garry Hayes recently named players the club should target:

Chelsea's terrific balance was at the heart of their title win. Mourinho's men never overcommit to attacks but always possess adequate numbers moving forward. Both wingers help out defensively, and Nemanja Matic's stationing on the halfway line provides a reliable clean-up service.

Chelsea have a powerful, physical spine that remains unbending for most matches, allowing the side to control games while creating chances.

Ronaldo, Griezmann and Sterling would all be fascinating signings. Even if none of those individuals arrive, Mourinho will pick his new personnel meticulously.

Subtle improvements could greatly improve Chelsea's prospects on the European stage, which no doubt frustratingly for Mourinho, he has never conquered at the club. It's encouraging to see him speak so openly about signings now the season is over, allowing Chelsea fans to anticipate what should be an exciting summer.
