Kolo Toure, Andre Wisdom Agree to New Liverpool Contracts: Details and Reaction

Gianni VerschuerenMay 26, 2015

Liverpool announced new contracts for veteran defender Kolo Toure and youngster Andre Wisdom on Tuesday, as reported by the Guardian's Andy Hunter:

The news of Toure's new deal was confirmed by James Carroll of LiverpoolFC.com, and the one-year deal will make sure the 34-year-old doesn't leave the club during the summer as a free agent. Carroll also confirmed the news of Wisdom's new contract.

Wisdom spent the 2014-15 campaign on loan with West Bromwich Albion, and according to the Daily Mail's Joe Bernstein, the Reds will use the 22-year-old as their starting right-back next season, pushing Emre Can back into the midfield.

While fans will be curious to find out what Wisdom can bring to the club after an up-and-down season with West Brom, the news of Toure's new deal should be greeted with more enthusiasm.

Often the butt of jokes and memes, per Bleacher Report UK, the Ivorian featured regularly for Liverpool in 2014-15 and brought stability to a defensive unit that looked shaky at best early in the campaign:

The Ivorian played in 21 matches for the club this year, per the Liverpool Echo's Neil Jones, and he spoke of continuing his career at Anfield just days ago:

"

Liverpool is a great club for me to stay at. Liverpool is going to be massive. I love Premier League football and I played all my years here. And if I can finish here it would be great. My kids go to school here and they are half-English, and that is important as well. I play for Liverpool right now, and I am very happy. If it was to carry on, I’d be more than happy.

"

Toure won't be a regular starter next season, but as an experienced depth option, he still has a role to play with Liverpool. The veteran will receive his minutes during cup games and gives the club a Premier League tested backup in case of injuries to the regular starters.
