Manchester United Transfer News: Louis Van Gaal's Top Targets and Latest Rumours

Matt JonesMay 25, 2015

Reported Manchester United target Gregory van der Wiel has revealed that he has received offers from England amid speculation he has no future at Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking with l’Equipe (h/t George Bellshaw of Metro) the Dutch right-back claimed that while he isn’t too concerned about his future, some of the Premier League’s top clubs have made their interest known.

“Yes. I’m not worried,” he said when asked if he had received any offers. “No French clubs but in England the big clubs who dispute the Champions League.”

Although Van der Wiel is clearly taking a relaxed attitude to his status at the Parc des Princes, he must have some underpinning concerns. After all, as noted by Bellshaw, rumours regarding a potential pursuit of Dani Alves continue to fester and the Brazilian’s acquisition would push the Dutchman even further down the pecking order.

As we can see here courtesy of MailOnline Sport, the French newspaper has also claimed that Van der Wiel could head to Old Trafford as part of a deal that would bring Angel Di Maria to PSG:

Focusing on the full-back, he’d clearly address an area in which United are short. For the majority of this campaign, Antonio Valencia, who is primarily a midfielder, has been deployed in the right-back slot. Although he’s done a decent job, Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal will be acutely aware that he needs a specialist in this position.

As noted by Bleacher Report’s French football expert Jonathan Johnson, Van der Wiel has fallen well out of favour with the Parisians too:

Now 27 years old, Van der Wiel has failed so far to deliver on the masses of potential he showcased at Ajax. A move to United could potentially galvanise his stuttering career, but at this juncture, the Red Devils could probably attract players of a better pedigree to Old Trafford, especially if they’re looking to challenge for major honours next season.

Gundogan Deal Agreed, Says Report

According to Duncan Castles of Goal.com, United have agreed terms with Borussia Dortmund on a deal to sign midfield star Ilkay Gundogan.

As we can see here courtesy of the Goal.com Twitter feed, in the piece, Castles outlines five major summer transfer targets for the Red Devils, one of which is the already acquired Memphis Depay:

Gundogan has become a regular fixture in the Dortmund team once again in 2015 after 2014 was blighted with injury problems. And it’s little surprise that BVB’s form has took a turn for the better ever since the German international was drafted back in to the side.

Is he really the kind of player United need, though? Ben McAleer of WhoScored.com and Bleacher Report’s Sam Tighe don’t think so:

At his best Gundogan is a player who can drive a team forward with a swagger. He carries the ball well, makes intelligent decisions in the final third and is a bundle of unrelenting energy. But if United are on the hunt for someone to replicate the influence of Michael Carrick at the base of their midfield, he’s definitely not the right man in terms of style.

Probably in terms of fitness too, as noted here by Bleacher Report’s German football expert Stefan Bienkowski:

While the German international has helped to improve Dortmund, he’s not quite rediscovered his sparkling best. After such an extensive layoff and a succession of injury problems, the jury is out on whether or not he ever will.

For the player, an intriguing summer surely lies in wait, especially after he rejected the offer of a new deal put forward to him by Dortmund, per Castles. If he has joined United, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of role Van Gaal has earmarked for him, but at this juncture, getting Gundogan on board would be an indulgent purchase from the Dutchman.
