College Football Pick'em 2009: The Ten Best Game of Week One
Every week, right here, I will be selecting what are, in my humble opinion, the ten best games of each week of the college football season. So without further from me, welcome to pick'em, week one. (note: AP rankings will be used BR rankings are established)
Game of the Week
#13 Georgia at #9 Oklahoma State
Winner Oklahoma State-This is probably the biggest home game of the season for the Cowboys. It also has the potential to get ugly in a hurry if Georgia comes out flat. Expect Zac Robinson and Dez Bryant to light up the Bulldog secondary. Also look for a good game from Georgia receiver A J Green. In the end, the Cowboys will show why the Bulldogs rarely leave the south to play games.
#5 Alabama vs #7 Virginia Tech (Atlanta, GA)
Winner Virginia Tech-Don't expect the Tide to start off as fast in this game as they did last season against Clemson. Look for a close, low scoring game here. Starting experience at quarterback gives the edge to the Hokies.
#16 Oregon at #14 Boise State
Winner Boise State-What a great game to open the college football season with. Look for a high octane, score fest in this one. This will be close, but the Broncos will pull it out at home on the Smurf Turf. This will launch Boise State back to the BCS, seeing as this is the toughest contest on their schedule.
#20 Brigham Young vs #2 Oklahoma (Dallas, TX)
Winner Oklahoma-This will be a tough early season game for the Sooners. Especially since the offense is not expected to be as prolific as it was last year. The Cougars are more than capable of upsetting Oklahoma in this neutral field, opening game setting. It will be a tight game but reigning Heisman trophy winner Sam Bradford will make the difference.
Miami (FL) at # 18 Florida State
Winner Florida State-The Seminoles will prove to be too much for te Hurricanes this early in the season. If this game was slated later in the season it would be much different. Look for Floridia State to dominate in all aspects of this game.
Nevada at #23 Notre Dame
Winner Notre Dame-The Irish start this years campaign off in the right way, with a win over a quality opponent. That is if they focus and don't look ahead to the following weeks game against Michigan. If that happens, the Wolf Pack are more than capable of upsetting them. A big game from Jimmy Claussen brings this one home for the golden domers.
Navy at #6 Ohio State
Winner Ohio State-The rushing attack of Navy will give the Buckeyes fits in the early going. Eventually the superior talent will take over and lead OSU to victory. Navy will stand a good chance if they catch the Buckeyes looking forward to the USC game, but that's not likley to happen.
South Carolina at NC State
Winner South Carolina-This is the beginning of a make or break year for Steve Spurrier at South Carolina. The Gamecocks take an early leas and hold off a good NC State team. Should be a low scoring, ugly game.
Missouri vs Illinois (St Louis, MS)
Winner Missouri-The Tigers are unbeaten (4-0) in neutral site openers under their current head coach, Gary Pinkel. That trend will continue in this game. Illinois will be a decent team this year but inconsistencies from last season will follow them in the early going. Take Mizzou, big.
Cincinnati at Rutgers
Winner Cincinnati- Excellent early season game between two teams that could contend for the Big East title. Look for the defending champion Bearcats to get off to a fast start and hold off a late surge from the Scarlet Knights.
There you have it for week one of the college football season. So kick back, crack one open and enjoy a great weekend of college football. Questions or comments? Get in contact with me at at any time by e-mailing me at jason_ellis@sprint.blackberry.com. Thanks till next time.
