Benjamin Misses Practice After Second Hamstring Injury

Thursday, June 18

ESPN's David Newton provided an image of Benjamin, who won't participate in activities Thursday:

Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer reported on June 17 that Benjamin showed up to workouts eight to nine pounds overweight and suffered another hamstring injury. Head coach Ron Rivera reiterated Benjamin's weight could have resulted in the injury, according to Newton:

"

It could be as simple as weight. He did come in a little heavy and he had to work himself into shape ... or diet or something. We’re going to take a look at it and make sure it’s not a chronic issue with him.

"

"This isn’t the first time Benjamin has shown up to a camp overweight. He was so overweight when he first arrived to Florida State—reportedly 20 pounds—that Seminoles coaches couldn’t justify putting him on the field and used a redshirt for him," Jones added.

Benjamin made an instant impact as a rookie for Carolina last season. He racked up 73 catches for over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns.

He's once again expected to serve as a key target this fall, so it wouldn't make any sense to take even a minor risk with his health at this stage of the offseason, especially after suffering a setback.
