Who Is College Football's Best Safety?

Lance SimerlySep 2, 2009

Is Eric Berry the best safety in college football or is it Taylor Mays?

Let's start by comparing each players career stats:

Taylor Mays has recorded 180 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 4 interceptions in his 3 years with the Trojans of USC.

Eric Berry on the other hand has recorded 158 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and has 12 interceptions.  Three of the int's he returned to the house.  He also currently holds the school record for int return yards with 487 and only needs 14 more yards to break the NCAA record as well.

Eric Berry 12 fewer tackles, 8 more ints, and 3 more int return TD's than Mays and yet Eric Berry is only entering his junior season.  Yet some out there are attempting to argue that Mays is the better safety due to the fact that he is more intimidating on paper at 6'3 and 235lbs.  While Eric Berry checks in at 5'11 and 203lbs.  However, former Georgia star running back Knowson Moreno can personally attest to the fact that Berry isnt afraid to lay the wood to players of the opposing team, that is if he can remember the hit.

After reading about both players from the so-called experts, it seems to me that Eric Berry is the best safety in college football.  This is by no ways a knock on Mr. Mays but the evidence for his case seems to be that he just bullies opposing teams Wide outs with his size and lacks the natural ball hawking instincts that Berry has.

Eric Berry has done more in his first two years than Mays has in his three.  Mays is physically bigger than Berry, but Berry has better instincts.  Overall I say that Eric Berry is the better of the two and has just shown me more on the field.
