Anderson Silva: Really Needing a Vacation or Dodging Henderson?
Fresh off of his stellar performance against Forest Griffin, Anderson Silva is ready for a vacation, according to his manager. Apparantly the MMA legend needs some time to take off to heal up.
“He’ll take a rest... he’s fought twice this year,” Soares said. “He’s got three fights left on his contract. He wants to work out [all the] little kinks and bruises that he’s got. He wants to take a little break.” From what, did he break a nail against Forrest?
Soares also added that they would like to see a match between Henderson and Marquardt to see who should get to fight for the title. If that’s not the case they would like a matchup in the Heavyweight division.
Personally I don’t think Dana White liked either of those suggestions. His comment that Anderson would box Roy Jones before he fights at heavyweight rules that match out. So is Dana willing to put the Middleweight belt on the shelf till 2010, that’s very doubtful.
Take the average four months for a fight to take place, that puts Henderson vs Marquardt happening in December. The victor would fight Anderson in April of 2010. That is a full year without any Middleweight championship fights.
The UFC doesn’t like for its belts to be shelved for no amount of time unless a champion is injured. Kinks and bruises are not injuries that are part of the business.
It would make sense for Silva to take a vacation if there wasn’t a legitimate contender for the title, but that is not the case here. Dan Henderson is a legitimate contender, he has won his last three fights and is the only man to win a round against Anderson Silva in the UFC.
So the effortless knockout of Forrest Griffin requiring a vacation has to make you question if Anderson is dodging Dan Henderson. Honestly I think it’s a possibility and very big one at that.
Dan Henderson is a no nonsense fighter. He goes in with a game plan and usually executes it to perfection. You want proof of that just watch his fight against Bisping.
He knew that Bisping circled to his left in every fight, it was Bisping’s worst habits and Dan continuously threw that heavy crow hopping right hook because he knew it was going to land.
Dan had a game plan against Anderson and he executed it, take Anderson to the ground and do away with his excellent stand up, but he got sloppy and ended up getting choked out.
Anderson knows that his weakest point is on the ground, he also knows that Dan’s strongest point is the ground. If I was Anderson I wouldn’t want to fight Dan Henderson, he’s the biggest threat to Anderson’s title.
Now you have to give Nate Marquardt some credit too, he has won three of his last fights as well but he also has a loss in there since his fight against Anderson Silva. The only reason he doesn’t get my nod of approval on a title fight is because I just don’t think he is a threat to Anderson Silva. His stand up is good but, Anderson Silva’s stand up is perfect.
So here’s to hoping that Dana makes Anderson fight before the close of 2009. I’m sure Dana needs to consult Anderson’s pedicurist about that broken nail though before scheduling a fight.
