Kentucky Basketball: Top Storylines from Wildcats' 2015 Recruiting Trail

Bobby ReaganMay 20, 2015

As the calendar gets ready to turn to June, the noise from the recruiting trail in college basketball starts to become quiet. That is unless you're Kentucky basketball.

Most of the top recruits have announced their commitments and transfers have decided where they will now go to school. However, there are still recruits out there whom Kentucky head coach John Calipari and his staff are chasing in hopes of landing their commitment.

While people around the country are saying it seems like a down year on the recruiting trail for Calipari, 247Sports still has Kentucky with the No. 2 overall class. Skal Labissiere, Isaiah Briscoe and Charles Matthews are committed, while Mychal Mulder is a junior college transfer.

In the following slides, we'll take a look at the top storylines from the Wildcats' 2015 recruiting trail.

The Race for Jamal Murray

1 of 3

Jamal Murray is technically in the Class of 2016, but there's a decent chance he'll move to the Class of 2015. If he does, he could very well push Kentucky to the top recruiting ranking yet again.

Murray is a 6'5", 4-star shooting guard, and Kyle Tucker of the Courier-Journal reported that he quietly arrived on Kentucky's campus for an official visit on Tuesday.

Murray would add a strong scorer to the backcourt to play alongside Tyler Ulis and Isaiah Briscoe. This would take some of the burden off Briscoe to be the dominant scorer from the guard position and allow Ulis to do what he does best, which is get his teammates open and distribute the ball.

Murray also adds another outside shooting threat, which would give Kentucky three strong shooters from deep. He's also considering Oregon, but having the Ontario native on campus right now seems to give Kentucky the edge.

This is the biggest name to watch in the next couple of days for Kentucky fans.

Could Thon Maker Reclassify?

2 of 3

Thon Maker is a slightly different case than Jamal Murray. He's currently in the Class of 2016, but if he does reclassify, there's a good chance he wouldn't start playing until the second semester.

Maker, who hails from the Sudan originally, is considering Kansas, Arizona State, Indiana and Kentucky. He's a 5-star 7-footer with a rather unique skill set and would bring much-needed depth to the front line for the Wildcats.

Despite his size, he seems to be more content handling the ball and shooting from the perimeter than pounding the ball down low.

Maker would allow Kentucky to run a different type of offense, with four guys outside and just one in the post while still keeping size on the defensive side of the ball. More importantly, getting Maker would mean keeping him away from rival program Indiana.

John Calipari to the NBA Rumors

3 of 3

It's becoming a yearly offseason tradition. Rumors start to swirl about John Calipari leaving Kentucky for an NBA job. Most recently, it was NOLA.com's John Reid reporting that Calipari was interested in the New Orleans Pelicans job.

That was quickly shot down by Calipari himself via Twitter.

Calipari went on to say he's happy at UK and has no desire to leave, even though the Pelicans have Anthony Davis and Tyreke Evans, two of his former players.

Obviously, any reports of Calipari leaving for the NBA represent a major storyline on the recruiting trail, as top recruits likely wouldn't be interested in committing to a school that is about to lose its head coach.

For now, though, Kentucky fans can take a deep breath, as it doesn't sound like Calipari is going anywhere.
