The injury could be a major blow for Uruguay's national team, who are among the favourites for the Copa America Centenario in June. La Celeste are built around the scoring prowess of Suarez and Paris Saint-Germain star Edinson Cavani, and losing either would be devastating.
Uruguay have dealt with Suarez's absence in the past—he was suspended for nine official international matches after an incident with Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 FIFA World Cup—and the results weren't pretty, as eventual champions Chile eliminated them in the quarter-finals of last year's Copa America.
Should Suarez's injury prove serious, Bordeaux's Diego Rolan and Hull City's Abel Hernandez will be expected to step up in his absence.
Uruguay are set to face Mexico, Venezuela and Jamaica during the group stage of this year's Copa America.
