Summer Transfers Who Would Fit Thomas Tuchel's Borussia Dortmund Style

Stefan BienkowskiMay 17, 2015

Borussia Dortmund will play Werder Bremen in their final league game of the season on Saturday ahead of the DFB-Pokal final against Wolfsburg the following week. Then, after seven seasons in charge, Jurgen Klopp will step down as manager of the club.

It will be a sad and touching moment most Dortmund fans will be doing their best to ignore for the time being, yet the former German champions will have to pick themselves back up and get on with preparations for the next campaign.

Fortunately, the summer brings with it the transfer window and new manager Thomas Tuchel. Those are two factors that could drastically alter just what Dortmund look like and how much success they have moving forward.

Here are a few players whom Tuchel may choose to turn to in rebuilding this team from scratch.

Granit Xhaka

We begin the list with Borussia Monchengladbach central midfielder Granit Xhaka. The box-to-box star, under the guidance of Lucien Favre, has developed into one of the most complete midfielders in the Bundesliga this season.

His careful blend of technical wizardry, cold-hearted tackling and closing down make him an ideal and genuine alternative to Ilkay Gundogan should Tuchel decide to cut his losses with the German and allow him to leave the club this summer.

Despite being linked with a move to Bayern Munich this summer, reported by Kosovan newspaper Telegraphi (h/t ESPN FC), Tuchel's Dortmund would present just as interesting a prospect should the 22-year-old opt to make the step up.

Johannes Geis

Should Tuchel decide against a bid for Xhaka, the former Mainz manager may instead chose to bring in one of his former players in young talent Johannes Geis.

Geis, who has been ever present in the Mainz side this season, has developed into a genuine talent in the middle of the park, and he has all the defensive attributes that could make him a welcome alternative to the tired pairing of Sven Bender and Sebastian Kehl.

The 21-year-old also isn't too bad with his set pieces, either, which is another area of Dortmund's game that could use some upgrading.

Roberto Firmino

Dortmund currently have a whole host of potential No. 10s in their squad. Marco Reus, Shinji Kagawa, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Ilkay Gundogan can all play in the role, yet aside from Reus, Tuchel will have very little proven quality to fulfil the position behind his striker and take the team on.

As such, young Hoffenheim phenomenon Roberto Firmino offers a logical alternative to a position that has bogged Dortmund down since Mario Gotze took off to Munich.

The 23-year-old Brazil international has amassed 12 goals and nine assists at the mid-table club this season, according to Whoscored.com. He's proven at the Bundesliga level and would show the aforementioned alternatives exactly what's needed to be Dortmund's key playmaker.

Jonas Hector

Although Dortmund will most certainly look to upgrade their squad in a number of positions this summer, no position needs a makeover quite like left-back.

Under the stewardship of Marcel Schmelzer, the left side of Dortmund's back line has slowly but surely degraded into an area that opposing teams almost always look to take advantage of. The Germany international has been a key player under Klopp for quite some time, yet Tuchel will probably want to bring in his own man.

One player who could step in to the role is Cologne left-back Jonas Hector. An unknown quantity at the top of the table, the 24-year-old has time on his side.

Hector has undoubtedly been one of the best full-backs in the league this season, and Tuchel will be well aware of what he could bring to his new-look Dortmund team.
