Calling True or False on 5 Recent Arsenal Transfer Rumours

James McNicholasMay 17, 2015

The silly season is upon us. With the transfer window now just weeks away from officially blowing open, the rumour mill is beginning to churn out all manner of stories about Arsenal's summer plans.

The Gunners will be eager to do their business efficiently to ensure their squad is settled ahead of the start of the 2015/16 campaign. Arsene Wenger's side ultimately paid the price for their poor start in the league and will be eager to put that right next season.

In this piece, we deliver a true or false decision on five recent Arsenal rumours. Read on to discover the verdicts on the latest transfer gossip concerning the north London outfit.

Callum Wilson to Arsenal

1 of 5

Sources have told ESPN FC that Arsenal have joined the list of clubs tracking AFC Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson. The 23-year-old has reportedly caught the eye after notching 23 goals during Bournemouth's promotion campaign.

Verdict: False

Arsenal recently handed a long-term deal to Chuba Akpom, so signing a player four years older with even less Premier League experience would be a bizarre move.

Petr Cech to Arsenal

2 of 5

Speaking to David Wright of the Express, Arsene Wenger refused to confirm his supposed interest in Chelsea's Petr Cech. The veteran goalkeeper remains widely expected to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

Verdict: True

If Cech was available, Wenger would surely do everything in his power to bring him to Arsenal. His experience and class would immediately improve the Gunners' goalkeeping options.

Karim Benzema to Arsenal

3 of 5

Jamie Anderson of the Express claims that Real Madrid could be prepared to sell Karim Benzema to fund a bid to bring Alvaro Morata back to the Bernabeu.

Verdict: False

Although Wenger would doubtless love to add Benzema to his stable of attacking talent, it's difficult to see Florentino Perez sanctioning his sale. Benzema will surely remain in Madrid.

Kamil Glik to Arsenal

4 of 5

According to reports in the Star (h/t the Mirror), Arsenal are set to go head-to-head with Manchester United in a battle for Poland international defender Kamil Glik.

Verdict: False

Arsene Wenger already has three senior centre-halves in Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel Paulista. Behind that trio, he has the emerging talent of Calum Chambers to consider. Only an elite centre-half would be considered suitable to break up that quartet.

Joel Campbell to Sporting Lisbon, William Carvalho to Arsenal

5 of 5

Lewis Rudd of the Metro reports on stories suggesting Arsenal could be prepared to use Joel Campbell as bait to tempt Sporting Lisbon into a deal for William Carvalho.

Verdict: True

Arsenal still need a new defensive midfielder, and it's difficult to see a place for Campbell in the squad next season. This is a deal that could suit all parties.
