Neymar, Messi Become 1st Teammates with 9 Champions League Goals
Barcelona forward Neymar scored his eighth and ninth goals of this Champions League season in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Bayern Munich, making him and Lionel Messi the first teammates in history to both score nine or more goals in a single CL campaign, per Alexis Martin-Tamayo.
Barcelona entered Tuesday's match with a 3-0 lead on aggregate, after Messi scored two goals and Neymar added another in the first leg back in Barcelona.
While it appeared the Catalan giants could advance by merely playing things safe, it turned out that at least one of Neymar's two goals was ultimately needed, as Bayern managed three scores of its own.
While Messi is still the leading scorer of this Champions League season with 10 goals, Neymar is now tied for second with Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Shakhtar Donetsk forward Luiz Adriano.
The tie may not last for long, as Ronaldo will have a chance to add to his total in Wednesday's match against Juventus.
Real Madrid enters the second leg of the CL semifinals trailing 2-1, but Los Blancos will have the advantage of playing at home in the Santiago Bernabeu.
With Madrid forward Karim Benzema boasting six goals thus far in the Champions League campaign, there's an outside shot he and Ronaldo could join Messi and Neymar as the only teammates to both score nine or more times in the same Champions League season.
In order for that to happen, Madrid will almost certainly need to advance, which would lead to the first-ever Barcelona-Madrid final in European play.
