Delhi Daredevils Impressive in Consolation Win

3 of 3

Delhi Daredevils (120/4) beat Chennai Super Kings (119/6) by six wickets.

An outstanding bowling effort from the Delhi Daredevils limited Chennai Super Kings to just 119 runs in the first innings.

Shabhaz Nadeem and Zaheer Khan got Delhi off to a very economical start, mixing pace and spin to limit Chennai to just 16 runs in the first six overs.

Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum struggled to achieve any sort of rhythm or fluency, and McCullum (11) became the first victim of Delhi's impressive display, guiding the ball directly into JP Duminy's hands as he tried in vain to vary his shots until something clicked.

Nadeem in particular caused Chennai all sorts of problems, mixing left-arm tweakers and barely disguised seamers to great effect, but it was Albie Morkel who next tasted success as his straight delivery produced an easy lbw to send Smith walking.

Faf du Plessis (29) and MS Dhoni (27) made valiant efforts to put some runs on the board for Chennai, but neither could build a significant total as both fell victim to their own urgency.

Du Plessis sent the ball into his own stumps in the 16th over before Dhoni went for a big hit in the penultimate over but got it horribly wrong, hitting high into the air to make for a straightforward running catch for Nadeem.

Chennai threatened early on when Delhi took the bat, dismissing Quinton de Kock on three runs in the third over before taking Duminy in the fourth for just six.

Yuvraj Singh and Shreyas Iyer then formed a fruitful partnership with Yuvraj scoring 28 in his 10 overs, while Iyer led the charge with an impressive and disciplined 70.

Pawan Negi saw Yuvraj and his replacement Morkel caught out by teasing them into poorly executed big hits but could do nothing about 20-year-old Iyer's brilliant batting performance and Delhi reached Chennai's relatively low total with four overs to go.

The win serves as little more than a consolation for Delhi as they remain in seventh place, but Chennai could now be caught by Kolkata Knight Riders or Sunrisers Hyderabad.
