Preakness 2015 Post Time: Live Stream and TV Schedule for Draw

Steven CookMay 12, 2015

The 2015 Preakness Stakes won't be run until Saturday, but the event will receive its proper ringing in and produce storylines for the weekend with Wednesday's post position draw.

American Pharoah enters as the big favorite with the opportunity to move one victory away from the elusive Triple Crown, but Wednesday will prove as much of a test to his crown as the race itself. Should the Kentucky Derby champion draw near the inside or even just inside Firing Line or Dortmund, he could be in trouble.

However, that same aspect of avoiding the inside could be said of any horse in the field. With that said, let's take a glance at how to catch the post position draw Wednesday evening.

It may be jumping the gun to call any leg of the Triple Crown "easy," but American Pharoah trainer Bob Baffert at least admitted that the quest in front of them to win the Preakness isn't exactly the toughest race.

Baffert told Richard Rosenblatt of The Associated Press (via ABC News): "To me, the Preakness is the easiest of the three legs. The Derby is the hardest. Once you get through there, you know your horses are in top form. It's a two-week turnaround. It's just a matter of getting there."

Well, it appears that American Pharoah is indeed there. And unless a dangerous crop of contenders pull something out of their hats that they didn't have at Churchill Downs, Saturday could end up being just another walk in the park.

American Pharoah proved at the Kentucky Derby that he can still pull away while being tested considerably down the stretch, and that will bode well entering a shorter Pimlico Race Course. His breakaway speed should come into play during the final stretch.

The biggest anticipation for American Pharoah lies in avoiding the No. 1 or 2 post. If he can do that, it just might be smooth sailing.

Firing Line

After coming up just short in the biggest race of the year, Firing Line still has the opportunity to play spoiler and prove his prestige in the process.

While American Pharoah's overtaking of the field at Churchill Downs was to be expected, few thought that Firing Line would be able to stay neck-and-neck with Dortmund. But after finishing as a runner-up to Dortmund in two previous races, Firing Line galloped past him down the stretch before American Pharoah stole the show.

Just like they did against Dortmund, Firing Line's camp hopes to overtake American Pharoah Saturday, as jockey Gary Stevens told U-T San Diego's Ed Zieralski, “I think we’ve got a really good chance of turning the tables."

If Firing Line can reach that extra gear down the stretch again, American Pharoah will be hard-pressed to hold him off for a second straight time.

Dortmund

For the better part of the Kentucky Derby, Dortmund was leaving the rest of the field in his tracks. Now, Dortmund will have to catch up to the tracks of others.

Baffert's second horse in the mix had seemingly gotten the best of American Pharoah and Firing Line at Churchill Downs, until it all came crashing down in the final few furlongs. Dortmund began sputtering on the inside while his two biggest contenders galloped past him for first and second place.

Arguably the largest horse in the Triple Crown circuit, Dortmund has the size to separate from contenders very early on in races. After starting his career six-for-six, the Derby marked just the first time in his racing career that Dortmund was chased down.

Could the Preakness be a recipe for revenge? That will only be the case if Dortmund can pace himself and keep enough in the tank for the final stretch. With the quality of these favorites, the pace is going to ramp up in the final few furlongs—and Dortmund better be ready.
