Rickie Fowler completed an epic charge up the leaderboard to take the Players Championship title in a sudden-death playoff on Sunday afternoon at TPC Sawgrass.

Fowler, who was left for dead heading to the back nine, played the last six holes in six under par to get 12-under for the tournament and take the lead heading into the clubhouse. His four under on the last four holes set a record for the lowest score and number of shots on those holes in tournament history.

But Sergio Garcia, who led for most of the afternoon, and Kevin Kisner weren't willing to concede the championship without a fight.

Both equalled Fowler's 72-hole score, and Kisner lipped out a putt to win on 18, forcing a three-hole aggregate-score playoff.

All three men parred the par-five 16th hole after missing the fairway.

Fowler and Kisner each birdied on the treacherous island green at 17, but Garcia's par was enough to place him behind the eight ball and needing a birdie to stay alive on 18.

Garcia was eliminated with a par on that hole, and it was Fowler and Kisner who advanced back to 17 for sudden death to decide the title.

Fowler, who owned the 17th hole all week, birdied once again after Kisner came up short to win the championship in epic fashion.

He played the last 10 holes of the afternoon in eight under par to win golf's unofficial fifth "major."
