While the Browns drafted Johnny Football last year with designs on him becoming their franchise signal-caller, head coach Mike Pettine is far from ready to bestow that honor upon him.
According to Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, Pettine is more comfortable right now with McCown due to his veteran status:
Pettine also said that McCown was currently the favorite to be the starter in the regular season, per Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer:
Additionally, Manziel was released from a rehabilitation center in April, so Cleveland's head coach has no plans to rush his progression, per Ruiter:
In terms of pure ability, it is difficult to argue against the notion that Manziel is the superior player. With that said, he is still sorting out off-field issues, and it isn't as if he played well when given an opportunity as a rookie.
As for McCown, he threw 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year, although he did shine to the tune of 13 touchdowns and one pick with the Chicago Bears in 2013.
The Browns have some good pieces on both sides of the ball and may not be too far away from contending for a playoff spot, but it will be extremely difficult if neither McCown nor Manziel emerges as a quality starter.
