Brandon George of The Dallas Morning News updated Brent's status:

Joe Trahan of WFAA passed along comments from Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett:

Brent released a statement on the decision, per Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk:

"

It is with careful consideration, much thought and reflection that today I announce my retirement from the NFL,” the statement read. “I have not taken this decision lightly, as my time in the NFL and as a member of the Dallas Cowboys has been the opportunity of a lifetime. Two of the greatest institutions in sports are the NFL and the Dallas Cowboys and I am humbled, honored and blessed to have been a part of both.

I have made the decision that Football isn’t as much of a priority in my life as other things at this time.

I would like to thanks the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry and Stephen Jones, the Jones family, my teammates, Jason Garrett and all of the coaches and the entire staff of the Cowboys for everything that they have done for me since I was drafted out of the University of Illinois in 2010. I also want to thank all of the Dallas Cowboys fans everywhere for their unyielding and loyal support, they are the greatest fans in professional sports. I will endeavor my best to make The Dallas Cowboys and their fans proud as I embark on this new journey in my life.

"

The Cowboys drafted Brent in the seventh round of the 2010 supplemental draft. He spent three years as part of the team's defensive line rotation. He registered 44 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble across 39 games during his first stint with the team.

Then, in December 2012, he was involved in a crash that killed Jerry Brown, a member of the organization's practice squad. He was convicted of intoxication manslaughter in the case, which came with a sentence of 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation.

After retiring and serving the jail term, Brent opted for a return to the Cowboys last season. He served a 10-week suspension and then played three games, one in the regular season and two in the playoffs, for Dallas down the stretch.

Now, he's apparently decided to walk away from the game once again. Brent or the team didn't immediately announce the reason for the latest decision.
