Chelsea Transfer News: Koke, Diego Godin Wanted, Latest Charly Musonda Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenMay 8, 2015

Chelsea have opened talks regarding transfer moves for Atletico Madrid stars Koke and Diego Godin, according to Gianluca Di Marzio's website and Sky Sport's Fabrizio Romano:

As reported by Romano, the Blues could use full-back Filipe Luis to hash out a deal, sending the Brazilian back to his former club along with a bag of cash in exchange for two of Diego Simeone's most pivotal stars.

It was previously suggested Luis could be used in a swap for one of the two, but Spanish football expert Sergi Dominguez notes that rumour never seemed very likely:

Koke has established himself as one of the top emerging midfielders in La Liga in the past two years, playing a big role in Atletico's unexpected run to the title and UEFA Champions League final during the previous campaign.

Godin is a respected, veteran centre-back who has been at the heart of the Atleti rebirth in the past few seasons, and fans and pundits were shocked when the Uruguay international was not selected to FIFA's Team of the Year in January, via MailOnline's Pete Jenson:

"

There were plenty of laughs thrown up by this year’s Ballon d’Or gala. There was the look on Lionel Messi’s face when he had to sit through a tribute from coach Luis Enrique, there was the look on Thierry Henry’s face when Cristiano Ronaldo let out his primal scream, and there was the moment when FIFA named the FIFPro team of the year and David Luiz was in ahead of Diego Godin.

The battle-worn Uruguayan who failed to make the team of the year despite and incredible 2014 might be overlooked on the world stage but no one at Atletico Madrid is held in higher esteem by coach Diego Simeone.

"

The 29-year-old combines with young compatriot Jose Gimenez to give the defending Spanish champions a fantastic defensive duo, and with Miranda also still in the mix, Atletico could have the depth to cash in one of their biggest assets during the summer.

A sale of Miranda remains likelier, but for the right offer, Godin could be available.

There's no ready-made replacement for Koke in Simeone's ranks, so prying the Spain international away from the Spanish capital may be tough. But Whitehouse Address understands why Jose Mourinho would try:

Convincing Atletico to sell them both during the same transfer window will be next to impossible, but both players would make excellent additions should they make the move to Stamford Bridge.

Perhaps Mourinho will simply inquire about which player would fit his particular needs best and pull the trigger on a deal.

Perhaps the Blues do not have such a big need for Koke's services, given the incredible progress Charly Musonda has made playing for the under-21s this past season.

The Belgian youth international is reportedly looking for a short-term loan to gain some first-team experience, and per Belgian newspaper DH (h/t TalkSport), AS Monaco are interested.

Monaco have built a Champions League side around their young talent and are never afraid to give teenagers a chance on the biggest stage. The 18-year-old Musonda may or may not be ready for such a giant step, but there's only one way to find out.

Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe is convinced the Belgian is the crown jewel of Chelsea's youth academy and is interested to see where his career takes him next:

"

But he's an exceptional talent in waiting, and he's exciting the fans. Boga's perhaps the most obviously pro-ready of the group, but Musonda is one of the most intriguing. His brilliant performance in central midfield simply adds another layer to what is sure to be a career worth keeping an eye on. His progression to senior football could be one of the most interesting storylines in recent Chelsea youth history.

"

Musonda has been playing more as a playmaking midfielder than a forward this season, showcasing his versatility. He also displayed his technique on set pieces during a recent match against Fulham, per the club's official Twitter account:

At this point in time, Musonda is almost too good for the youth leagues, and it would be interesting to see whether he could hold his own against Ligue 1 competition.

The French top league has an excellent reputation for nurturing young talent, so there may not be a better place for Musonda to take the next step in his career.
