A Progress Report on the Barcelona Players out on Loan

Jason PettigroveMay 10, 2015

Barcelona have five players out on loan at present.

Of the five, one has enjoyed a sterling season, while one of his colleagues has virtually disappeared from first-team selection.

One player is out of contract at the end of this season, and there is a high likelihood that Barca will not retain his registration.

Two still have a season of their respective loan deals left and are perfectly happy with their current arrangements.

Let's take a look at a progress report for each Barcelona player currently out on loan.

Ibrahim Afellay

Ibrahim Afellay endured an injury-hit spell with Barcelona, and it wasn't too much of a surprise when he was eventually loaned out.

Fortunately for the Dutchman, he has found his form again during his time at Olympiakos, which has led to reported interest from England.

George Bellshaw of Metro quotes this report from Sport that suggests Afellay could be on his way to Tottenham Hotspur next season.

Cristian Tello

Cristian Tello can be relatively pleased with himself as he comes to the end of the first year of his two-year loan at Porto.

Seven goals in 29 appearances is a reasonable return for the winger, and despite attracting the attentions of Liverpool and Tottenham, he wont be going anywhere this summer, according to his agent, Jose Maria Orobitg.

Joe Short for the Daily Express noted Orobitg's words:

"

He was loaned out to Porto on a two-year deal.

Barca could call him back after just one, but don't worry, that isn't going to happen. He won't return next season, but will be back the year after.

"

This time next year, Barca are highly likely to have a new president and potentially a new management team in place, so quite where that might leave a returning Tello is anyone's guess.

Alex Song

West Ham are unlikely to take up their option of signing Alex Song to a permanent deal.

Alex Song made a super start to his West Ham United career, with manager Sam Allardyce even handing him the captain's armband.

His performances were a chief reason why the Hammers found themselves so highly placed in the Premier League table earlier in the season.

Unfortunately, as West Ham's season declined, so did Song's. Darren Lewis of the Daily Mirror notes that his form has dipped to such an extent that the east Londoner's won't shell out the £80,000 per week required to acquire Song's services on a permanent basis.

The Cameroonian's contract at Camp Nou does not expire until June 2017.

Gerard Deulofeu

Sevilla are apparently unhappy with Gerard Deulofeu's attitude.

It's fair to say that Gerard Deulofeu hasn't enjoyed the best of times while on loan at Sevilla.

Thought to be part of Luis Enrique's plans, the youngster was unceremoniously dumped from the squad at the eleventh hour.

The Andalusians gave Deulofeu a lifeline, but it appears that attitude problems, which have hampered him throughout his career, are behind his lack of opportunities.

"

Deulofeu finds himself in exile, all but frozen out of the first team picture in recent weeks.

[...] Sevilla management have shed some light on the decision, with sporting director Monchi giving us his two cents on Deulofeu's development:

"Deulofeu is a great player, but he has to learn to live with the elite"

The implied message is clear for all to see; Deulofeu has the talent, but he still doesn't have the attitude or the maturity to apply it correctly on the field and that's holding him back.

"

Jamie Sanderson of Metro notes that Liverpool are preparing a shock move for the player, who might welcome a return to Merseyside after a successful period at Everton last season.

Denis Suarez

Deulofeu's colleague at Sevilla and fellow Barca loanee Denis Suarez has fared a whole lot differently during this campaign.

The youngster has made 37 appearances in all competitions, per WhoScored.com, with 20 of those coming as a substitute.

His six goals and four assists have included a superb volleyed winner over Zenit Saint Petersburg in the quarter-final of the Europa League, a competition in which Sevilla are holders and are 3-0 up against Fiorentina going into the second leg of their semi-final.

Suarez is due to stay in Andalusia for another season as part of the terms of the deal that took Ivan Rakitic to Barca.
