Depay Completes Medical
Monday, May 18
Manchester United confirmed that Depay completed his medical on Monday.
"The club will now work towards finalising his registration for when the international transfer window opens in June," they added, via Twitter.
The two clubs reached an agreement for the 21-year-old Dutchman on May 7, and Depay will move to Old Trafford when the transfer window opens in June, subject to him successfully passing the medical.
The news was announced on the PSV website (in Dutch) and United's Twitter feed:
Depay expressed his excitement and thanked PSV and their fans on Instagram:
"I always say; Dream, Believe, Achieve. I was dreaming and believing of becoming the champions of the Eredivisie with @PSV and we achieved it. I’m extremely grateful towards PSV, all the fans, @underarmour and@segfootball for believing in me. Now it's time to set my goals again on winning trophies with@ManchesterUnited.
"
SEG Football, Depay's management company, passed along more from the winger on its Facebook page:
Depay has been a long-rumoured target for the Red Devils, and the move will see him join up once more with former Dutch national team manager Louis van Gaal, now in charge at Old Trafford.
He scored 22 goals in PSV's title-winning 2014-15 season, per WhoScored.com, and is widely touted as one of the top prospects in Europe, per talkSPORT.
The PSV hierarchy has been braced for Depay's departure for a while, with Marcel Brands, the club's director, conceding in April that they would be unlikely to keep their star man past the summer, per Eurosport.
Manager Phillip Cocu reportedly told the other PSV players that Depay was set to depart before the official announcement, and the fee is reported at around £22.5 million, per European football writer Kristof Terreur:
It looks to be a good deal for both sides, with United getting their man and PSV picking up a hefty transfer fee for one of their young talents.
PSV will now be able to invest heavily in new players as they go in search of further Eredivisie glory next term.
Depay is a highly rated player. He is far from the finished article, but as an attacking force, he has the potential to be a superstar. Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe compared him to Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo:
The Red Devils could do with added creativity in attack, summed up by their fluctuating goalscoring form throughout the season.
Liverpool will not be happy with the news, as they were apparently leading the race to sign Depay until recently, per The Sun (h/t James Whaling of the Daily Mirror).
United spent big last summer and clearly intend on doing so again when the transfer window opens. Tighe suggests a replacement for striker Robin van Persie should be high on the list of targets:
By signing Depay so early, United not only bagged one of the hottest properties in the game but also got the jump on many of the other Premier League teams as they look to strengthen for next season.
Depay will surely not be United's only signing of the summer, but he will make for an exciting addition to the Premier League and another dangerous attacker at Old Trafford.
