Royal Challengers Bangalore Crush Kings XI Punjab, Regain Top 4 Spot
3 of 3
Royal Challengers Bangalore (226/3) beat Kings XI Punjab (88) by 138 runs.
Royal Challengers Bangalore nearly set a new IPL record for the most one-sided win in the league's history, bombarding Kings XI Punjab with runs in their innings before completely shutting their opponents down with the ball in hand.
Wednesday's match was one the most dominant performances the IPL has seen in years, and it sends a strong signal to the other teams ahead of the upcoming play-offs.
Bangalore were sent out to bat first and wasted no time attacking the Punjab bowlers, as Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli found plenty of success in the early overs. Gayle, in particular, was chasing boundaries aggressively, while Kohli tried to build more of a rhythm and frustrate the bowlers.
Punjab responded by throwing as many yorkers as possible, but it still took the team more than 11 overs to grab their first wicket. Kohli was dismissed after facing 30 deliveries, but replacement AB de Villiers took over and continued the attacking onslaught.
He also showed some creativity with this particular shot, as shared by ESPN Cricinfo's Freddie Wilde:

Meanwhile, Gayle continued swinging at every ball he saw, finishing his knock with 117 runs from 57 balls, including an incredible 12 sixes. The West Indies star copied Cristiano Ronaldo's celebrations when he hit the century mark and was clearly in good spirits, to the joy of the home crowd.

Sarfaraz Khan would add 11 more runs after Gayle was caught, leading to the monstrous total of 226. Anureet Singh was the only Punjab bowler capable of keeping his economy rate in single digits, giving up 25 runs in four overs, while Sandeep Sharma led the way with two wickets.

Faced with an almost ridiculous required run rate, Punjab came out chasing every ball in a desperate attempt to keep up with Bangalore's score. Murali Vijay and Mana Vohra were easy targets for the Bangalore bowlers, who knew they could take as many risks as they wanted, backed by the enormous score of their batsmen.
Things went from bad to worse for Punjab, who lost five wickets in the Powerplay as Sreenath Aravind and Mitchell Starc feasted on the batsmen. Aravind would finish the match with four wickets and 27 runs from four overs, while Starc did even better, giving up just 15 runs and grabbing four wickets.

In what must have felt like a living nightmare for fans of Kings XI, Wriddhiman Saha (13) and Axar Patel (40) were the only batsmen to manage double-digit runs. Patel was the only reason Punjab didn't lose by a record-setting margin, as shared by Wilde:
Largest #IPL Defeats Ever: #KKR beat #RCB by 140 runs #RCB beat #KXIP by 138 runs #RCB beat #PWI by 131 runs #RCBvKXIP

Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, Aravind explained how happy he was he took his chances when they came to him:
"Been two years, have been working hard. This is what I train for and it came off well. I am grateful for the Adam Milne injury, sorry for him, but I did well. Taking good wickets like Maxwell, Miller and Bailey. Bangalore always supports us and I've given them an opportunity to cheer for me. Starc's given me a lot of tips, bowling in the right areas and change of pace and yorkers.
"
Bangalore's net run rate was given a massive boost by the lopsided win, pushing the team all the way up to third place in the standings. They'll meet Mumbai Indians next, a match that will have a huge impact on the race for the play-offs.
Kings XI remain dead last in the standings, and after yet another embarrassing loss, fans are likely hoping the season ends quickly for their club.
