Little League World Series 2009: Chula Vista Silences Taiwan

Jo-Ryan SalazarAug 30, 2009

It was bound to happen. It was written. This year would be the year that Taiwan (or Chinese Taipei for all you whippersnappers sympathetic to the mainland) would see its streak against Californian teams in the Little League World Series broken.

Park View Little League, flying the flag for the proud San Diego suburb of Chula Vista and the Golden State, broke away in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to defeat Taoyuan City, 6-3, on Sunday at Howard J. Lamade Stadium in Williamsport, Pa.

The big bats of Taoyuan caused frustration for starting pitcher Isaiah Armenta, who gave up home runs to Sung Wen Hua and Ou Chin in the top of the third inning.

Timely hitting and clutch fielding was going to save Park View.

Third basemen Seth Godfrey hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning, and shortstop Andy Rios added three hits to finish his successful LLWS campaign.

Kiko Garcia sat down six batters to pick up the victory. Garcia also added two hits.

Lin Hung Yuan took the loss for Taoyuan, who crumbled at the hands of defensive blunders late in the game.

The victory also makes Chula Vista the first California city in sixteen years to win the Little League World Series. The last city to do so was Long Beach, who won back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993.
