1000 Guineas 2015: Winner, Payouts and Order of Finish

Matt JonesMay 3, 2015

Legatissimo produced a marvellous finish in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, as the David Wachman-trained filly seized victory in the race’s 202nd running.

With Ryan Moore aboard, the 13-2 shot roared to the front in the final furlong, reigning in the much-fancied Lucida, who finished in second place. Tiggy Wiggy finished in third after a fine trip around.

Legatissimo Edges Brilliant Race

Having been run for over two centuries, this is a race that has almost incomparable prestige on the horse racing landscape. As such, anticipation was palpable as the post time edged ever closer at Newmarket.

The pre-race favourite was Lucida. Part of the Godolphin stable, the impressive three-year-old’s year had been centred around this particular race. Although she suffered a shock loss in the Fillies' Mile as part of the preparations for this one, Kevin Manning seemed at ease in the saddle for long spells in this race.

Indeed, in the aftermath, Graham Cunningham of Channel 4 Racing reflected on an excellent performance from the favourite:

In truth, there’s little more jockey or horse could have done, as Moore timed Legatissimo’s run to the finish expertly.

Manning was superb in taking his ride to outside as the field began to stretch out, building up what looked like an irretrievable advantage for the rest of the field. But the eventual winner, who has shown her quality over longer distances in the past, showed her superb staying power once again.

Legatissimo ate up the ground in style during the final furlong, eventually crossing the line a length ahead of Lucida to take a thrilling win.

As we can see here courtesy of Channel 4 Racing’s Oliver Brett, the margin of victory for Wachman’s winner was very tight:

For Moore, it was an historic triumph. After riding to victory aboard the sensational Gleneagles in the 2,000 Guineas on Friday, the win here makes it an illustrious double for the decorated three-time champion jockey.

Naturally, he was delighted in the aftermath, per BBC Sport:

"

Things happened nicely, she switched off well and we got a nice tow into the race. It's the first time I've sat on her, but she's obviously got plenty of ability, the second is a fair filly and she has run her down real well in the end.

They went a proper gallop, she's got plenty of speed but she really got up the hill well. I wouldn't be sure about a mile and a half, but I think she'll go further.

With AP McCoy now retired, there’s certainly a void to fill as the most illustrious jockey around, and after two superb displays in two notoriously competitive races, Moore is clearly a man set on cementing his status amongst the elite. After all, his achievement here makes him the first rider to win both the Newmarket Guineas races since Kieron Fallon in 2005.

After securing two of these coveted victories, there will be some who feel Moore has a great shot of making it a clean sweep of all five English Classics in 2015. That’s a long way off yet, but his star is certainly on the rise, and in Legatissimo, the legendary jockey may well have helped launch the career of a superstar.
