USMNT Watch: Guzan Dropped by Villa, Garza Scores Rare Goal

Joe TanseyMay 3, 2015

Fans of the United States men's national team went into a bit of shock on Saturday morning when they saw that one of their top players had been relegated to the bench late in the season.

Brad Guzan's benching came at a crucial point in the season for Aston Villa, and it temporarily halted his preparations for this summer's Gold Cup.

Outside of Guzan losing his starting job, the USMNT players across the globe delivered a good amount of positives with just a few weeks left in the European season.

Below is a recap of how the key players in the USMNT talent pool performed this weekend.

Guzan Dropped After Howler

One week after committing a brutal howler in the early stages of the loss to Manchester City, Guzan found himself on the bench for the Villans' home match with Everton.

The benching of the goalkeeper ended his streak of 108 consecutive starts in the English Premier League, per ESPN's Paul Carr:

With Guzan on the pine, Villa held on and defeated Tim Howard's Everton 3-2 at Villa Park. The win boosted Tim Sherwood's side up to 14th place on 35 points.

Geoff Cameron was not in the 18 for Stoke City's trip to face Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium, while DeAndre Yedlin started on the bench for Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Down in the Championship, Jonathan Spector and Tim Ream played 90 minutes for their respective sides, Birmingham City and Bolton Wanderers, on the final day of the season. Danny Williams featured for four minutes off the bench in Reading's 3-0 win over Derby County.

Garza Nets Rare Goal for Club Tijuana

USMNT left back Greg Garza scored his first club goal since November 15, 2012 on Friday night in Club Tijuana's 2-1 loss to Atlas. Garza opened the scoring with a tap-in at the left post in the 45th minute at the Estadio Caliente.

Edgar Castillo started the move that created the winning goal on Friday night, as his surge down the flank opened up the Tijuana defense. Joe Corona also played 20 minutes for Xolos in the exciting affair in Liga MX.

After winning the CONCACAF Champions League with Club America on Wednesday, Ventura Alvarado started in the club's 3-1 win over Toluca on Saturday.

In Puebla's 2-0 victory over Club Leon, Michael Orozco played 90 minutes, while Herculez Gomez came off the bench for a 22-minute shift.

Wondolowski, Davies and Dempsey Score in MLS

Chris Wondolowski scored a goal that shouldn't have been allowed in the San Jose Earthquakes' 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake on Friday night. Wondolowski appeared to be a few feet offside in the 19th minute of the clash at Rio Tinto Stadium, but no call came from the referee.

Kyle Beckerman was lucky not to be sent off in the first half, while Nick Rimando and Luis Gil also featured for 90 minutes for RSL.

Charlie Davies' ninth-minute opener for the New England Revolution was the highlight of Saturday night's action in Major League Soccer. Jermaine Jones, Juan Agudelo and Sacha Kljestan all started in New England's 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls. Kljestan pulled back a late goal for the Red Bulls in the 73rd minute.

Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore both went the full 90 in Toronto FC's 1-0 road victory over the Philadelphia Union. Michael Parkhurst and Perry Kitchen did the same on opposite sides of the pitch in D.C. United's 2-0 win over the Columbus Crew

Gyasi Zardes, Omar Gonzalez and Robbie Rogers all turned in 90-minute shifts in the LA Galaxy's 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids.

Clint Dempsey scored a goal and produced an assist in Seattle's 3-1 victory over New York City FC on Sunday night.

USMNT Defenders Face off in Germany

The final match of the weekend in the Bundesliga saw Fabian Johnson's Borussia Monchengladbach defeat John Brooks' Hertha Berlin 2-1. Johnson featured on the left wing for 79 minutes, while Brooks completed the match at center back.

Timmy Chandler was not a part of Eintracht Frankfurt's 1-0 loss to Werder Bremen on Saturday.

In the 2.Bundesliga, Bobby Wood, who could feature up top at the Gold Cup, started for Erzgebirge Aue on Saturday. Alfredo Morales and Ingolstadt can move one step closer to promotion with a win over Nurnberg on Monday.

News and Notes

Alejandro Bedoya and Nantes lost to Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 on Sunday in Ligue 1. The midfielder played all 90 minutes for the losing side.

Aron Johannsson and Rubio Rubin had the week off to prepare for the final two weeks of the Eredivisie campaign. Johannsson's AZ Alkmaar sit in fourth, while Rubin and Utrecht are in 11th after 32 matches.

Freddy Adu played 62 minutes for Kuopion Palloseura in their 1-1 draw with Mariehamn on Sunday.
