Kentucky Derby 2015: American Pharoah Odds, Saturday Betting Update

OddsShark.comMay 2, 2015

American Pharoah is holding steady atop the betting odds at the track and at the online sportsbooks just hours before the running of the 141st Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

The colt was installed as the 5-2 morning-line favorite, and his favored status for the race has held according to the latest Kentucky Derby betting odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.

On Saturday morning the field was reduced to 18 with the late scratch of International Star, who was 20-1 on the morning line. The Mike Maker trainee won the Louisiana Derby (Grade 2) in his last start.

Owner Ken Ramsey told Frank Angst of Blood Horse it was a front-foot issue.

“Our blacksmith took the left-front shoe off, and there was definitely some heat on the inside quarter of the left-front foot," Ramsey said. "Something's brewing in there, probably an abscess. There's nothing major wrong with the horse whatsoever. We think we'll probably have him ready to come back for the Preakness, but time will tell."

Dortmund remains the second choice in the betting, but his odds have drifted up from his 3-1 morning line to 4-1. The colt is undefeated in six career starts. The Baffert trainee swept the three Derby preps in Southern California, taking the Santa Anita Derby (Grade 1) in his most recent start.

Wood Memorial (G1) winner Frosted took some early betting action on Friday afternoon. The Kiaran McLaughlin-trained son of Tapit was 15-1 on the morning line and has been bet down to 9-1. The colt will be ridden by Joel Rosario, who won the 2013 Derby aboard Orb.
