Dallas Cowboys Mock Draft: Updated Day 3 Predictions

John OwningMay 1, 2015

It couldn't have gone much better for the Cowboys through the first three rounds of the NFL draft, as they selected two immediate impact players, Randy Gregory and Byron Jones, and one player who filled a specific need, Chaz Green.

The Cowboys have an opportunity to put together an NFL draft that could really set them up well for this year and beyond.

They still have a glaring need at running back, and it would be very surprising if they didn't address that position sometime on Day 3. Also, the Cowboys need to get better depth on the interior of the defensive line, and they could even look for a quarterback whom they can develop for the future.

With that said, let's look ahead at who the Cowboys could select on Day 3 of the 2015 NFL draft.

4th Round

1 of 3

The Pick: Mike Davis, RB, South Carolina

The biggest need left on the Cowboys roster is at the running back position; therefore, they should look to fill that hole early on Day 3 with South Carolina's Mike Davis.

Davis isn't a very athletic running back, but he runs with great power and balance to break tackles as he knifes through a defense. Moreover, he is an extremely patient runner who reads his keys well and exhibits exceptional vision to find creases.

Davis is the type of running back who can handle 25 carries a game and get better with each one. Once he establishes a rhythm, he is extremely difficult to stop.

He's not a very elusive running back. He also needs to work on his pass protection ability, but that should be relatively fixable.

Overall, Davis would be a great addition to the Cowboys offense and would fill the void they have at running back.

5th Round

2 of 3

The Pick: Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA

In this scenario, the Cowboys make a bold move as they draft UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley. The Cowboys need to start developing a quarterback to replace Tony Romo once he retires, and Hundley is the perfect man for the job.

Hundley is a quarterback with an extremely high ceiling who needs to figure out a way to become more consistent. On the surface, Hundley has all the traits you want in a starting quarterback, but he has yet to display them for any significant stretches of time.

At his best, Hundley reads through his progressions, moves in the pocket, stays in balance and makes extremely accurate passes to receivers. At his worst, Hundley drops his eyes early and throws bonehead interceptions.

He needs time to sit and develop behind an established quarterback, and that is exactly what he would be able to do with Dallas.

7th Round

3 of 3

The Pick: George Farmer, WR, USC

The Pick: Darius Philon, DT, Arkansas

The seventh round is a place where the great teams separate themselves from the good teams. If the Cowboys select USC's George Farmer and Arkansas' Darius Philon, they will be well on their way to becoming a great team.

Farmer is a speedy receiver who can stretch a defense and give the Cowboys a legitimate deep threat on offense. He has a lot of work to do with his route running, though, as he tends to really slow down through his cuts and struggles to create significant separation on breaking routes.

Farmer would step in and be a gunner on special teams who can be developed into a No. 3 or 4 receiver in the future for the Cowboys.

Philon is an extremely disruptive defensive tackle who would be a perfect rotational under tackle in the Cowboys defense. Philon is an extremely quick player who does a great job penetrating his gap and getting into the backfield.

He needs to do a better job of getting off blocks when he can't initially penetrate, and he needs to improve his functional strength to take on double teams.

Philon can step in, be a great backup to Tyrone Crawford and give the Cowboys a pass-rushing threat from the interior defensive line.
