NFL Draft Rumors: Breaking Down Buzz Around the League Before Round 2

Timothy RappMay 1, 2015

So Round 1 at the NFL draft came and went with barely a whimper, at least compared to all of the shouts that there would be crazy trades and stars changing teams and Chip Kelly trading Rocky to the Tennessee Titans to nab Marcus Mariota.

In the end there were just two trades and few surprises. Teams that normally make head-scratching picks made smart ones. Teams that normally go unorthodox with their selections played it straight. Perhaps that was due to the strength of the class, but few teams made selections that were questionable.

Ah, but will there be more madness on Day 2?

Don't be surprised if that is the case. As Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports, at least three teams are interested in trading up to open the second round:

Adam Schefter of ESPN added:

The Seattle Seahawks didn't have a pick in the first round and have a lot of third-round selections, so if they identified a player they really like who dropped down the board, it wouldn't be shocking to see them move up. With Bruce Irvin perhaps wearing out his welcome in Seattle, could the Seahawks roll the dice on Randy Gregory to play the "Leo" position?

That would be an interesting fit, and one would guess the Seahawks would embrace Gregory, even after his admitted past of marijuana use.

The Atlanta Falcons really could use a tight end, so perhaps they'll look to move up for Maxx Williams. They could look to upgrade the defense as well, which is what you would guess the Pittsburgh Steelers would be trying to do if they moved up. The Steelers could certainly use help in the secondary, and with Landon Collins available, he's a possibility.

Phil Savage of ESPN was shocked Collins dropped to the second day:

Of course, one of the best players still on the board is Arizona State wide receiver Jaelen Strong, who will surely be gone within the first 10 picks of the second round commencing. A lot of teams will have interest in landing him, and as Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports, two teams in particular could bring him aboard.:

The Titans will have the option to take a talented player, regardless of whether it is Strong or not.

"I'm excited about 33—there should be a really good player there," general manager Ruston Webster told John Glennon of The Tennessean before the draft. "Maybe we'll have options there at that point in time, too. But I think 33 could be a really good pick for us."

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, meanwhile, seemingly are thrilled with the way the board is falling to them at No. 34, per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times:

In other words, the Bucs are guaranteed to get a player they want, assuming they are prioritizing the offensive line. With a new quarterback in town in Jameis Winston, keeping him protected should be a priority, so don't be surprised if one of those players is the pick.

Finally, the St. Louis Rams may be able to nab another pick by dealing away Zac Stacy. The running back reportedly isn't thrilled that the team drafted Todd Gurley and would like to be moved, per Schefter:

Stacy probably wouldn't garner a very high pick for St. Louis, but with Tre Mason and Gurley already on board, anything the Rams get in return would be gravy.

The first round didn't get terribly crazy for NFL teams, but in a deep draft class and with a lot of teams holding plenty of ammunition with a stockpile of late-round picks, the second and third rounds could end up being eventful.

If nothing else, we should at least see more wheeling and dealing than we did on Thursday.
