As Quinn and DA Battle, Mangini Has Browns Looking Like a Real Team

Will GraysonAug 29, 2009

For two weeks this team looks as if they are responding to coaching.  Although it is the preseason, one has to assume there will be some carry over.  Brett Favre is coming to town in two weeks and Mangini will have this team ready.

The question is will they play for him.  There has been improvement in the play of phases thus far. Yet, it is the preseason...for a moment viewing the highlights, with the right quarterback this team is loaded offensively.

Folks, Joshua Cribbs has arrived....I would argue with friends and family that he is the best player the Browns' have.  It's actually Shuan Rodgers but Cribbs' effect on game situations is compelling.

His ability to establish field position both on punt and kick returns. The "WildCat" effect that he brings with his experience at Kent State. Now, he has morphed into a full fledge wide receiver.  See what coaching does for you.

What will coaching do for the quarterback competition?

It has brought out the best in both Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn.  Give Quinn credit for quieting the notion about his perceived inaccuracy.  He has completed roughly 63% of his passes including a touchdown pass.  Which is important because it proves he can at least throw one.

Way too many field goals for me folks........yet Anderson looked good, the deep ball was flowing for him Saturday night.  He didn't throw an interception, that was key for him as well.

Even I'm torn as to who should ultimately be named the starter.  What I do know is that they will have a lot of weapons at their disposal this season.  It's the defense ability to get off the field what's driving me crazy.

You kind of get the feel that Brady can get the ball out of his hands to people who can best make the plays after the catch.

Where as with DA, you realize that God gave him a cannon of an arm.  With protection and sound route running this guy will light it up.  By the way you have to have guys catch the ball.  His completion percentage is way lower than Quinn's due to his knack for throwing deep.

My gut tells me that nothing has convinced Eric Mangini that DA can have a completion percentage in the low to mid 60's.

That being said Quinn will start September 13, 2009 against the Vikings.  The defense has proven to at least compete without Rodgers in the lineup, they held there own.  It is also why Quinn gets the nod, for if the defense was putrid Anderson would be the guy because you would have to use his arm to compete in shootouts every week.
