Liverpool Transfer News: Memphis Depay Sparks Huge Reds Rumours on Facebook

Rory MarsdenApr 28, 2015

PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay has dropped what could be viewed as a huge hint on social media that he will opt for Liverpool over Manchester United when he departs the Eredivisie this summer.

The 21-year-old is reportedly being pursued by both Liverpool and the Red Devils, and he has admitted that he is looking for a move to a big club, per Daniel Prescott on MailOnline.

Depay has now dropped a significant hint that Anfield may be his eventual destination, per Jamie Anderson of the Daily Star, by liking a reply on his official Facebook page which reads: "Welcome to Liverpool."

As the Liverpool Echo's Sean Bradbury noted, it potentially suggests that Depay would prefer a move to Liverpool:

It is not the first time that the Dutch international has caused a frenzy on social media. As Anderson reports, Depay recently favourited a link to a report about his supposedly imminent switch to Old Trafford.

His latest move is hardly an admittance that he is on the way to Anfield.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers refused recently to admit the club's interest in Depay, although he was complimentary about the young star, per Kristian Walsh in the Liverpool Echo:

"

I can’t confirm either way - you know me, in terms of speculation of players. The kid is a very talented player, of course. But I wouldn’t like to confirm either way. It’s clear we need the goal threat for next year. There’s going to be a whole raft of players that I’m sure will be looked at, then will be up to the club if they’re affordable and if they’re available.

"

Liverpool certainly do need to bring in a goalscorer over the summer. Having lost Luis Suarez to Barcelona last year—and Daniel Sturridge for much of this season to injury—they have scored just 47 times in 34 games this season, compared to the 101 they netted in the 2013-14 campaign.

Depay could be the perfect purchase. He is currently the Eredivisie's top scorer this term with 21 goals, per WhoScored.com, and his dynamism would be most welcome in an oft-stale Reds attacking line.

Suarez's replacement Mario Balotelli has been a significant failure at Liverpool, and the Italian looks set to depart the club in the summer, per Bleacher Report's Matteo Bonetti:

Depay would surely be an upgrade on Balotelli.

However, after Tuesday's 1-0 loss to Hull City, Liverpool's Champions League hopes for next season look to be diminishing rapidly—they sit seven points back from fourth-placed United—potentially a key factor in the Depay transfer, per Football Oranje:

Although United have lost back-to-back matches in the Premier League, their top-four status does not look under threat, and Depay may be more inclined to join a Champions League club.

Furthermore, much has been said about Depay's potential desire to link up with his former national team manager, current Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal, per Dutch football expert Elko Born:

Depay's latest Facebook move could be an indication that he wants a move to Liverpool, or it could simply be a red herring.

He is a hugely talented player and it is unsurprising that he is being pursued by top clubs but where he will end up in the summer still remains to be seen.
