NFL Draft 2015: Latest Rumors, Potential Landing Spots Surrounding Top Prospects

Rob GoldbergApr 29, 2015

Heading into the first round of the 2015 NFL draft, everyone wants to know which players are going to what destination.

It's always difficult to trust what teams are saying in the days leading up to the draft because a lot of it can be a smokescreen and misdirection intended to confuse other teams. That being said, we are starting to get some information about how the beginning of the draft will play out.

Here is a look at the latest buzz surrounding some of the more notable prospects in the draft.

Jameis Winston Still Going No. 1

PASADENA, CA - JANUARY 01: Quarterback Jameis Winston #5 of the Florida State Seminoles looks to pass the ball against the Oregon Ducks in the third quarter of the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual

Every team is going to take as much time as possible to make a final decision, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are likely already sold on their pick. With the first overall selection in the draft, it seems they are destined to take Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston.

Ira Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune noted this information earlier in the month:

Peter Schrager of Fox Sports followed that up by saying none of the other talk should prevent this outcome:

If you don't believe the inside sources, you can always look at the work the Buccaneers have done to examine Winston's life off the field. CollegeFootball 24/7 notes that general manager Jason Licht recently explained to The Tampa Tribune how many people he spoke to on the subject:

You don't do this much work unless you are preparing to make this pick.

Winston has the talent to be a franchise quarterback, filling a major need for Tampa Bay. Although he might not be a sure thing like some other No. 1 picks, he appears to be the best fit for the organization.

Shane Ray's Huge Slide

NFL prospects sometimes have to deal with questions about off-field problems, including past arrests. However, it's harder to explain these types of issues when they happen just a few days before the draft.

This is the situation surrounding Shane Ray, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter:

The timing of the citation makes it unlikely the pass-rusher will be taken in the first 10 picks as expected. Instead he'll see a slide down the board. Ian Rapoport of NFL.com explained how new teams are getting involved after not thinking he would necessarily be available:

Meanwhile, analysts like ESPN's Mark Dominik think the slide will be much greater:

In situations like this, the mindset remains that it only takes one team to take a chance on him. This means it is unlikely the fall lasts all the way to the third or fourth round. Still, a drop to the second round seems very possible for the once highly regarded prospect.

Arik Armstead to the 49ers

SANTA CLARA, CA - DECEMBER 5: Defensive lineman Arik Armstead #9 of the Oregon Ducks rushes against the Arizona Wildcats in the third quarter on December 5, 2014 during the Pac-12 Championship at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Oregon won 51-

The later you get in the first round, the harder it is to predict where players will land. However, there are a number of people who believe defensive lineman Arik Armstead will end up with the San Francisco 49ers.

Mike Mayock of NFL Network initially described this perfect fit for the franchise, per Cam Inman of the Mercury News:

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller later used his sources to explain why he will likely be the pick if available:

The 49ers need to replace Justin Smith along the defensive line as well as add depth to a position that desperately needs help at this point. The squad could end up in a transition year next season, but Armstead has the talent to make a difference early in his career.
