Bangladesh made slow progress against Pakistan on the opening day of the first Test in Khulna.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the hosts finished on 236-4 at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium.

Bangladesh crawled to 60-1 at lunch on a flat pitch, with Tamim Iqbal departing for 25 just before the adjournment.

An inside edge off leg-spinner Yasir Shah was pouched by a diving Azhar Ali at short leg.

The hosts upped the tempo in the afternoon and reached 150-2 at tea.

Imrul Kayes was the man to go for 51. The opener brought up his second Test half-century off 129 balls but then got a leading edge that allowed Mohammad Hafeez to take a simple return catch.

A 95-run partnership for the third wicket ended as Mahmudullah narrowly missed out on a 12th Test fifty.

On 49, he was induced into playing at a delivery from left-armer Wahab Riaz, and keeper Sarfraz Ahmed took a flying one-handed catch to his right.

Mominul Haque, who was dropped by Zulfiqar Babar on 17, brought up his 50 off 108 balls, but the 23-year-old was dismissed from the last ball of the day.

Slow left-armer Zulfiqar trapped him lbw for 80 after a 49-run stand with Shakib Al Hasan (19).

Pakistan, who have lost all four games on the tour in the 50- and 20-over formats of the game, handed a debut to Sami Aslam, with Soumya Sarkar and Mohammad Shahid making first Test appearances for Bangladesh.
