Manchester United Transfer News: Edinson Cavani Boost, Latest on Gareth Bale

Nick AkermanApr 27, 2015

Edinson Cavani will reportedly seek a move away from Paris Saint-Germain if he isn't given the chance to shine up front, providing Manchester United with a potential boost ahead of the summer.

George Bellshaw of Metro cites "a source close to Cavani," speaking to Le Parisien:

"

There is no question that he will not stay one more season if the sporting situation doesn’t change. This is the bottom line. Edinson understood that, in the interests of the team, he had to play on the right side and he has done that for two years now. But that’s not to say that the position suits him.

LONDON, ENGLAND - MARCH 11: Edinson Cavani of PSG and Willian of Chelsea battle for the ball during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, second leg match between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge on March 11, 2015 in London, England.

The source also indicated Cavani isn't willing to play second fiddle behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic, relayed by Bellshaw: "He wants to play at the axis of the attack—his preferred position—and not only when Ibrahimovic is absent. He needs continuity in that position to fully express the qualities that made him a top scorer in Italy."

Cavani is currently the subject of interest from United, Arsenal and Liverpool, according to Bellshaw. The Red Devils' lack of goalscoring prowess has been amplified by back-to-back scoreless losses to Chelsea and Everton, in which Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie have appeared—albeit briefly in the case of the latter.

Those looking to snap Cavani up will have watched his PSG career with fascination. He's appeared to have travelled through a range of emotions at the Parc des Princes, previously saying he wasn't happy before announcing the opposite. The reason continually given for the Uruguayan potentially exiting PSG is his not playing up front, the position in which he flourished for Napoli.

B/R UK's Alex Dimond recently compared Cavani and Falcao:

Hernandez Unwanted by Van Gaal, Bale Key to Madrid

United fans may look to Javier Hernandez's six goals in eight games for Real Madrid and wish he was back at Old Trafford.

The Mexican is currently due to return to Manchester after his loan spell in the Spanish capital ends, but Paul Hetherington of the Daily Star believes Louis van Gaal will opt for Falcao over Hernandez in the summer.

Hetherington provided quotes from the Dutch manager:

"

Chicharito's future? I have sent him away already. I said the same as I said to [Danny] Welbeck: 'You are again a substitute and I don't think that is good for you.' When you score a goal—as he has just done for Real Madrid—are you suddenly different? I don't think so.

"

On Falcao, LvG said: "I can't say the same to him. Falcao has the quality to play. I liked the way he played at Chelsea," per Hetherington.

Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti recently suggested both Hernandez and reported United target Gareth Bale cannot be dropped from his side, reported by Rajvir Rai of the MailOnline.

His words represent another setback in the pursuit of Bale:

"

The whole team worked well [in the 4-2 win over Celta Vigo]. If Chicharito is in this form he's non-negotiable, like Cristiano [Ronaldo], [Karim] Benzema, James [Rodriguez], [Gareth] Bale, [Sergio] Ramos, Isco, [Raphael] Varane, Pepe...I have a team of non-negotiables, but only 11 can play and the rest stay on the bench.

"

This may hint toward Ancelotti's desire to make Hernandez's loan move permanent in the summer, but the player is likely to know only injuries to both Karim Benzema and Bale have made his recent success possible. This is a similar setup to his time at Old Trafford, where he was most often called upon from the substitutes' bench.

Van Gaal is in the odd situation of possessing three world-class strikers who cannot seem to maintain a prolific run of form. Rooney's troubles stem from the boss constantly changing his position, but Falcao and Van Persie's lack of quality shows no sign of coming to an end.

Cavani has proven hit and miss in front of goal this season—scoring 11 in Ligue 1 but missing an awful lot of chances—yet he could provide an answer to the Red Devils' problems.

Many United fans crave Bale's arrival, but as noted in Ancelotti's appreciation of Hernandez, he remains key to the manager's plans.
