Ten Goals the Spartans Can Hit....

John OpieAug 28, 2009

Want to share a Top Ten list of items that we would LOVE to see…
These would help provide a successful season for the Spartans…

Their not out of the realm of possibility and are reasonable to achieve….

Not all are necessary, but.. It’d be nice… and all would help to secure a special season in East Lansing.

1) Best case 11 -1 , worst case record of 8 – 4.. (SpartyMSU predicts 11 – 1)
Beat who we are supposed to: Montanan State, Central Michigan, Wisconsin, Michigan, Northwestern, Minnesota, Western Michigan and Purdue.   And  possibly Win 3 out of four against the tougher opponents: Notre Dame, Illinois,  Iowa, Penn State.

2)
Beat Michigan in East Lansing: I’m not going to elaborate now.. I am sure you know my feelings and opinions..  Win on Oct. 3….  PERIOD.

3)
One QB emerges as the Leader before Game 3.
We don’t care who, since both Keith Nichol and Kirk Cousins are very talented. From watching them in the Green and White games and in Fall camps, both seem to have good visions, and game sense. My real concern is next year with these 2, plus red shirt freshman Maxwell, and super recruit Joe Boisture.

4) The “Go to” Running Back defined by Game 3, but platoon all 4.
Larry Caper, Ashton Leggett, Edwin Baker, and Caulton Ray.    Player that emerges, rushes for >1000….  This will allow for a nice diversified offense.  We will not have Javon, but with a solid Back corps, and a known solid receiving corps, Spartans put points on the board as a duel threat scoring team.

5) Offensive Line gels. We have lost only 2, the right side, but from reading the preseason camp reports, and watching the Green and White game, we have talent to replace talent.  The Spartans pulled plenty of gaps for Javon,  and this year they continue to open holes.
Last year Spartans “O” line allowed 13 QB hurries, 12 fumbles, 24 sacks.  Improve on this to : 10 Hurries, 11 Fumbles, 15 sacks.

6)
Receivers have a big year as expected.  Get over 3000 passing yards. There is a talented group of receivers: Mark Dell, Blair White, Dion Sims, Keshawn Martin, Myles White, Brian Linthicum.  The Dropped Ballitis is cured, catches are made…

7) Defense: “D” line was good last year.. it gets better.  We did loose talent at DE and DT, but  it is being filled by talent.        In 2008 Spartans had 26 sacks, 10 fumbles, 14 ints.    With the skill at linebacker and the solid secondary, I expect this to increase to at least 30 sacks, 15 fumbles, and 18 ints.  Plus increase QB hurries from 21 to 28.

8) BCS Bowl bid or Preferably, The ROSE Bowl…. Post season here we come…

9) All Coaches are retained.. Everyone stays together for at least 4 more years.. Good staffs are hard to find. Dantonio has worked with Treadwell and Narduzzi since (I think) since 2004.  Should keep them together.

10) Defensive POY: Greg Jones.    First Team Big Ten: WR Mark Dell, TE Brian Linthicum, and DE Trevor Anderson.

Not such outlandish goals..
But hitting these will go along ways to getting to Pasadena…
