5 Moves Borussia Dortmund Need to Make in the Summer Transfer Window

Stefan BienkowskiApr 26, 2015

It's back to the drawing board for Borussia Dortmund this summer as Jurgen Klopp departs for pastures new and Thomas Tuchel comes in with a freshly wiped slate and every intention of doing significantly better than this current campaign.

The majority of Tuchel's time will undoubtedly go down to training regimes and getting himself acclimatised to the new surroundings yet what every fan will want to know is just who will be lining up in his starting 11 come the first day of the new season.

Here are the five moves the new Dortmund manager will have to make this summer if he wants to hit the ground running at the Westfalenstadion.

Offload Ciro Immobile

According to the Daily Telegraph on April 22, Liverpool have big plans to offload Mario Balotelli this summer and are looking to bring in his countryman Ciro Immobile as a replacement.

Although the 25-year-old has only just arrived at Dortmund, and will undoubtedly be given the benefit of the doubt by most fans, he may find himself simply out of the loop when Tuchel takes over in June.

Talented and an unfortunate victim of Klopp's tactics and team selections this season, the striker may just be out of luck at a club on the cusp of complete transition.

Cut Their Losses with Ilkay Gundogan

One of Tuchel's biggest moves this summer will be deciding whether or not to keep Ilkay Gundogan or in fact cash in on him before the new season.

The undoubted talent of the German international may be crucial to any rebuilding exercise next season but should he opt out of extending his contract, Tuchel may find himself having to rebuild another team the following year.

As such, Dortmund could save themselves a whole load of bother by simply selling up and starting afresh in the middle of the park.

Keep a Hold of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

One of the most troubling rumours to come out surrounding a Dortmund player of late is the news that Arsenal may well be interested in signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

A story initially reported by Sky Sports—but published online by The Mirror on April 16—this could offer some real trouble for Tuchel if the Premier League side are intent on picking up the striker.

With 21 goals this season, the Gabon striker is undoubtedly the standalone, accomplished forward at the club with a goalscoring record that far surpasses the likes of Immobile and Adrian Ramos.

Dortmund simply must keep a hold of this player if they hope to push on next season.

Cash in on Mats Hummels

4 of 5

Like Gundogan, Dortmund face a similar problem trying to predict the future ambitions of central defender Mats Hummels who will undoubtedly have a whole host of potential suitors chasing him this summer.

The simple fact of the matter is that the former German champions really don't need the star defender anymore. The likes of Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Neven Subotic are more than capable of holding down the fort with Matthias Ginter.

Should Manchester United or Barcelona make a big offer the German giants would be fools not to cash in on the wavering talent.

A New Goalkeeper Is a Necessity

Saturday's game against Eintracht Frankfurt was a welcome change for many Dortmund fans when Mitch Langerak was brought into the starting lineup for the injured Roman Weidenfeller.

The young Australian international has often done well when called upon and looked like a genuine alternative to his ageing German colleague. However, for many Dortmund fans the need for a world-class option between the posts is much needed and long overdue.

Much of this summer's transfer activity will be focused on the defence, central midfield and perhaps even up front, but if Tuchel really wants to push this squad on, he'll have to upgrade on his shot stopper.
