The New York left winger found himself wide open in front of the net after Alexander Ovechkin hammered captain John Tavares into the boards. With two players looming over Tavares, the puck skirted over to Nick Leddy, who fed Kulemin in front of goal.
The game-winner just past the halfway mark of the third period forced Game 7 on Monday between the Islanders and Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center. If the Islanders are victorious in that contest, they will play at least two more games at their current home before moving to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn next season.
Tavares scored the first goal of the game with just under seven minutes gone in the first period. John Carlson countered on the power play with six seconds remaining in the first stanza.
Four minutes after Kulemin's game-winner, the Capitals almost equaled the score again. But Jay Beagle's shot bounced off the crossbar and out of the goal mouth.
Cal Clutterbuck secured the Islanders' third victory of the series with an empty-net goal with 52 seconds to go in the contest.
Game 7 will be played at 7 p.m. ET on Monday night in Washington, D.C.
