Manchester United Transfer News: Mats Hummels Angered by Dortmund Exit Rumours

Nick AkermanApr 23, 2015

Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels is bored of answering questions about Manchester United.

Eternally linked to the Red Devils, the German defender told Bild (h/t Vaishali Bhardwaj of Metro) that he's fed up of addressing speculation.

"I don't want to talk about that topic constantly," said Hummels. "I did it a few weeks ago—and that must be enough."

Hummels previously slammed suggestions he had given former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson his word that he will one day join United, per Hannah Duncan of the Metro.

"To clarify it: this supposed 'promise' is simply fictitious," he noted on Twitter (translation per Duncan).

Pete O'Rourke of Sky Sports provided comment from Dortmund:

With BVB boss Jurgen Klopp confirming he is leaving the Westfalenstadion at the end of the season, speculation is destined to intensify further yet. Dortmund cannot qualify for next year's Champions League, while third-place United are on the brink of confirming their return to the elite European competition.

Hummels is a top-class player, someone who contributed massively to Germany's 2014 World Cup win, so it's likely he'll wish to continue testing himself against the best. Klopp's departure follows that of players such as Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski, symbols of the Dortmund side that reached the Champions League final in 2013.

With the German club in transition, it's possible United manager Louis van Gaal can lure Hummels away. The Premier League side need an experienced leader at the back. Hummels is the type of ball-playing defender Van Gaal likes and could form an effective partnership alongside the improving Chris Smalling, who recently signed a new contract, per United's official website.

Hummels' power and aerial dominance could also sit well alongside the pacier Marcos Rojo, offering Van Gaal a number of potentially fruitful combinations. Hummels has proved loyal throughout all the rumours so far, however, meaning it would be naive to assume his career with Dortmund is coming to an end.

B/R UK's Sam Tighe recently discussed a number of alternatives to Hummels:

Like United's reported (yet futile) interest in Kevin Strootman and Arturo Vidal, it's easy to assume the Hummels switch will be completed just because it has been spoken about for so long. Neither party has provided official confirmation it will take place, though.

While the deal makes complete sense, Hummels' saga threatens to follow that of Wesley Sneijder, a player United is linked to on an annual basis without ever securing his future.
