Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Purse: Projected Prize Money Payouts Before Fight

Tim DanielsMay 2, 2015

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are set to face off in a high-profile fight that would have left a hole in their resumes if a deal was never reached. While bragging rights are certainly on the line, they are both massive winners from a financial standpoint.

The exact numbers for what they will earn won't be known until after the bout. That's because all of the revenue needs to get tabulated. Everything from the pay-per-view money and merchandise sales from around the globe must be tallied.

That said, the numbers are expected to amaze.

Gareth Davies of The Telegraph reports that the showcase at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas should land Mayweather at least $120 million. Pacquiao, who's taking 40 percent of the revenue pie, would take in at least $80 million.

The final amounts are likely to check in even higher, though.

John Branch of The New York Times states current projections for the overall revenue the two fighters could split is around $300 million. That would equate to $180 million for Money and $120 million for Pac-Man. Wow.

Just how quickly will they start to see the money? The next business day.

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, who works with Pacquiao, told The New York Times the Filipino sensation would receive $50 million first thing Monday.

"On Monday morning, I will hand Manny a check for $50 million as a down payment, guaranteed," Arum said.

Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions wouldn't announce how much the American would receive in his first payment, but he did tell the outlet it would be an even higher total.

"I will tell you this," Ellerbe said. "Floyd Mayweather's check will be a lot more than $50 million. And then it goes from there."

Ultimately, they could end up getting a little bit more or a little bit less depending on how things shake out. It's always tough to accurately project exactly how much attention a major event like this is going to draw both in the United States and around the world.

The bottom line is the same: Both Mayweather and Pacquiao are going to provide a significant boost to their bank accounts by facing off Saturday night. It's an astonishing payday for a fight that will last 36 minutes or less, which makes you wonder why a deal couldn't be reached previously.

Now boxing fans just have to hope the event lives up to the hype.
