Manchester United Transfer News: Mats Hummels Bid Lodged, Hugo Lloris Rumours

Rob BlanchetteApr 22, 2015

Manchester United have fired the first shots of their summer transfer campaign, with the German press reporting they have placed a bid for Mats Hummels.

Jack Watson of Squawka.com translates Bild's report Louis van Gaal has lodged a €30 million (£25.2 million) offer for the World Cup winner with fallen Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

However, Richard Tanner of the Express says United will have to meet Dortmund's valuation of £35 million for the player in order for the clubs to do business over a move.

Hummels has had a disappointing 2014-15 season, with his team capitulating in the Bundesliga, spending the whole campaign in the lower regions of the division.

This has facilitated the demise of Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund, and the time is now right for Van Gaal to present his offer and exploit Hummels' situation.

The centre-back has suffered with injuries this season but has still made 19 starts in the German league, per WhoScored.comBut his presence has not been enough to steady the ship at the Westfalenstadion, and the Klopp era is set to come to a sad end.

In other news, Hugo Lloris could be on his way to Old Trafford as United consider potential replacements for David De Gea, if the Spaniard decides to sign for Real Madrid in the summer.

David Hytner of The Guardian speculates the French international would like to stay in the Premier League, with United as a possible destination for the Tottenham Hotspur No. 1:

"

Lloris’s preference would be to stay in the Premier League and the future of David de Gea at Manchester United could have an impact. De Gea is a target for Real Madrid; he has a year to run on his contract and has so far resisted United’s efforts to tie him to a new deal. If De Gea leaves, Lloris could be a contender to fill the vacancy.

"

However, Hytner highlights the player does not have an impetuous personality, and he may yet pledge his future in the short term to Spurs:

"

He is not the impulsive type; he was expected to leave Lyon in the summer of 2011 only to stay for one more year while, at 28, he knows that time remains on his side. He also likes the Tottenham manager, Mauricio Pochettino.

"

The loss of De Gea would devastate the current United squad model but Lloris would be a viable option for Van Gaal.

The team already has the services of Victor Valdes, but with the goalkeeper's recent injury record, Van Gaal will be looking for a younger model.

Hummels has been consistently linked with United throughout the past 18 months, but it is questionable whether he is the right player for Van Gaal's current needs.

Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Paddy McNair have all shown positive signs of getting to grips with the manager's 4-3-3 system, and Van Gaal may throw his budget toward other positions.

However, at £35 million, Hummels would be something of a steal. He is still only 26 years old and his best years are ahead of him. United are in need of additional leaders, especially at the back, and Hummels would bring a winning mentality with him to the club.
