Manziel Second to Take Snaps at OTAs
Tuesday, May 26
Pat McManamon of ESPN noted that Manziel was the second quarterback to take snaps at Cleveland's OTAs, which McManamon believes indicates Manziel is currently the team's backup quarterback.
On May 6, NFL.com's Marc Sessler provided comments from Browns general manager Ray Farmer, who spoke out in support of Manziel after a rough rookie season:
"Johnny's been good since he's been around the Browns family. I commend the young man for taking the necessary steps that he felt were needed to take. That being said, since he's been back here, he's been good. He's doing everything he's been asked to do. He seems dialed in and focused and that's what it's about, making football his first priority for us on this end, but, again, inevitably, we're really focused on making sure the young man has his life together.
"
Those comments came after head coach Mike Pettine publicly supported Manziel following a report in March, via Randy Miller of NJ.com, stating the team had "about 90 percent moved on" from Manziel prior to his release from rehab.
Mary Kay Cabot of the Northeast Ohio Media Group provided the supportive comments from Pettine, who said, "I filed that one in the ridiculous category. He's very much in our plans.''
Despite that, Pettine went on to say that Manziel's career "hit the pause button" and stated that the quarterback's recovery had to come first, via Cabot.
Manziel posted a dismal 42 passer rating in limited action over five games last season. While he flashed some potential during a touchdown drive against a top-tier Buffalo Bills defense, he looked unprepared in a 30-0 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Browns also have Josh McCown, Connor Shaw and Thad Lewis on their roster at quarterback. Based purely on playmaking ability, you could make an argument Manziel has the most upside of any of those options. He must prove it, though.
