Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has signed a new "long-term" contract with the Reds, which sees the 24-year-old commit the best part of his career to the Anfield club.

Liverpool's official Twitter announced the news on Thursday:

Henderson's deal will reportedly be worth "at least £100,000 a week," according to The Telegraph's Chris Bascombe.

The player commented:

Manager Brendan Rodgers was quick to send out the message that Liverpool are a club on the brink of success with the likes of Henderson leading the way:

Steven Gerrard's departure for the Los Angeles Galaxy this summer will inevitably put pressure on Henderson to fulfil the duties his mentor once did so effectively.

Henderson is a hard-working leader for the Reds. His energy, combativeness and passing quality play a major role in Rodgers' men dictating games. He is often relied on to carry out a variation of roles—such as working down the right flank when Liverpool are short of wingers—and is a vital component of the club's success.

He has scored six and assisted eight this campaign, per WhoScored.com.

With his star surging both on Merseyside and as part of Roy Hodgson's England squad, there are high hopes for what Henderson can produce moving forward, but the Daily Mirror's Jim Boardman isn't convinced:

Earlier in the week, Ben Smith of BBC Sport reported Henderson is "among the favourites" to take the club captaincy when Gerrard does make his way to Major League Soccer.

Henderson's contract commitment is one obstacle Liverpool and their fans are undoubtedly happy to have out of the way, with the playmaker seemingly a key member in Anfield's new era.

Rodgers will now hope the likes of Raheem Sterling, Martin Skrtel and Jordon Ibe follow suit in the coming weeks.
