Bud Selig's Legacy, what will it be?

Bill MckillopAug 27, 2009

Bud Selig is the Commissioner of Major League baseball and he plans to retire in 2012 when his current contract expires. That leave the question what is Commissioner Selig’s Legacy? How will he be remembered? What will parents tell their Kids about the man who was in charge of the National Pastime for 20 years?

Wild Card & Realignment  – Mr. Selig has helped make some great changes in the game including the Wild Card and Divisional realignment. Previously MLB had 2 leagues the American League and National League with two divisions and East and a West. After the Strike of 1994 / 1995 we got to see the benefit on the realignment and Wild Card in baseball. MLB doubled it teams in the playoffs with 3 division winners and 1 “Wild Card” who had the best record behind the division winners. Now baseball has 8 of 30 teams make the post season instead of the Previous 4 teams.

Interleague Play- Interleague play was never an option in baseball as the National League did not play the American League unless it was the World Series. Now teams play a limited interleague schedule which the fans seems to enjoy.

Montreal Expos / Washington Nationals - The Montreal Expos were relocated to Washington and resold for $450 Million dollars after the Expos were broken by the Baseball Strike.

New Stadiums – In Mr Selig’s 20 years in office MLB will have had 20 new Stadiums with all the modern comforts of heaven. The ”20 years 20 stadiums” gave fans new comforts while enjoying America’s Past time.

Business of Baseball -  Under Selig baseball has grown from a 1.3 Billion dollar business to a over 7 billion dollar business.  Mr. Selig also 18 million dollars in 2007 for his efforts and is Sports highest paid commissioners.

In the last few years Mr. Selig has taken allot of criticism for Steroids or Performance Enhancing Drugs in Major League Baseball.

Steroids in Baseball – I am sure more will be made about the history of Steroids in baseball as the years move on and people feel obligated to talk. In 1991 Commissioner Fay Vincent sent a Memo that steroids in baseball were illegal even though there was no plan for testing.  Espn the Magazine ran an in depth story about steroids in baseball and “who knew” about the problem way back before Congress got involved. Of Course the self proclaimed “Godfather of Steroids” Jose Canseco dates steroid use back to before the 1985 season. Mr. Selig says he does not deserve the blame for Steroids and it’s not his fault, but I am not sure if that is his call.

Will Commissioner Selig be remembered for the made that Grew and Improved the game or will he be remebered as the Commissioner who let Steroids run wild?
