Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Angel Di Maria Exit Rumours

James DudkoApr 18, 2015

Angel Di Maria won't leave Manchester United despite struggling to make the grade during his first season at Old Trafford, as well as fears for the safety of his family in England. The Red Devils' record signing is already planning his stay by extending the rental lease on his Manchester apartment, per the Sunday People's Steve Bates (h/t Daily Mirror).

Di Maria has apparently described his debut season in the Premier League as the "toughest year of his career," according to Bates. He also cites how the Argentinian winger has found it difficult dealing with the robust style of play and frenetic pace of England's top flight.

The Telegraph's Thom Gibbs detailed those problems to B/R's Ryan Bailey:

That issue sparked rumours of a potential quick switch to mega-rich Ligue 1 outfit Paris Saint-Germain. The Mirror's John Cross recently suggested PSG are prepared to bid the £59.7 million fee United originally paid to pry Di Maria loose from Real Madrid last summer.

But that idea was soon refuted per The Sun (h/t Samuel Stevens of The Independent). Yet questions about the player's future at Old Trafford have still persisted.

Di Maria has found his first season with United a tough one.

Getting used to the speed of the Premier League wasn't the only issue possibly pushing Di Maria toward the exit door. Bates detailed how the playmaker's family were "victims of an attempted gunpoint burglary at their £4m rented mansion in the Cheshire village of Prestbury."

Naturally, Di Maria was left shaken. Manager Louis van Gaal even refused to "rule out allowing Di Maria to leave on compassionate grounds."

But Di Maria has since told his boss he's content to stay in England. That's great news for United, even though the £59.7 million man has become a marginalised figure during 2015.

Yet despite his struggles, the former Los Blancos star remains an outrageously gifted attacker. He's at once a goal threat, as well as a supremely stylish creator of goals.

Even during what by his own estimation has been a down year, Di Maria has lost none of his creative flair. In fact, the 27-year-old has still produced 10 assists in the Premier League, per WhoScored.com.

Citing statistics presented on a broadcast of Sky Sports News, Paul Fennessy, writing for Yahoo! Sport (h/t 101 Great Goals), detailed how Di Maria's season has been better than many think. Specifically, the numbers show Di Maria compares favourably to Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho: "While Coutinho’s four goals is better than Di Maria’s three, the Argentine international is on top in terms of assists (8 to 4) and chances created (45 to 37)."

Coutinho is a nominee for the PFA Player of the Year Award, per the association's official Twitter feed:

So maybe there's hope for Di Maria at United yet. He still seems slight for the physical rigours of the Premier League. But this is a creative talent who's thrived at the highest levels of the game.

Third-placed United want the title next season, and every title-chasing squad needs a match-winner with Di Maria's skill and flair.

He's not ready to walk, and the Old Trafford club shouldn't let him.
