Marquez Callaway to Tennessee: Volunteers Land 4-Star ATH Prospect
The class of 2016 is stacked with high-quality athletes, but one of the very best is officially off the market, as Marquez Callaway committed to play for Tennessee on Thursday:
According to , Callaway is a 4-star prospect who ranks as the No. 103 overall recruit in the nation. The Warner Robins, Georgia, product has yet to settle on a definitive position, but he is rated as the No. 3 athlete in his class.
The " star has thrived as both a and wide receiver at the high school level. He appears capable of playing either position effectively in college, and it isn't outside the realm of possibility that he could see time at both.
When asked for his preference, though, Callaway admitted that is a bit higher on the list, per Ryan Jordan of the Sun News (h/t Macon.com):
"I'd prefer to play receiver because I want the ball, but I'd play both," Callaway said. "I want the other team to match up one-on-one against me and I want them to put their best defender on me."
Versatility is always appreciated in major college football, which is likely why so many top-level programs were in pursuit of the dynamo.
According to , Callaway received offers from a plethora of schools, including Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, Florida State and Notre Dame.
One factor that likely played a role in Callaway's decision was his status as a two-sport star. He is also a stud basketball player, and he has expressed his desire to play both sports , per .com on Twitter:
Playing both football and basketball at a top school certainly isn't an easy thing to pull off, but it has been done before. Based on how athletically impressive Callaway is, he may very well have the ability to do it.
Having to focus on two sports could impact his progress in both, though, and it is possible that he'll eventually have to pick one sport and stick with it.
Until that time comes, however, Callaway is an elite football prospect who could make an instant impact as a receiver, corner or kick returner.
His speed and athleticism give him a great chance to contribute as a freshman, and those qualities give him a base upon which he can build and ultimately become a star.
