Arsenal Transfer News: Latest Georginio Wijnaldum and Paulo Dybala Rumours

James DudkoApr 16, 2015

Arsenal's bid to add the few missing pieces needed for a serious title challenge next season appears to have gotten a lot easier.

The Gunners have reportedly been told they can bid for Georginio Wijnaldum, while mooted target Paulo Dybala is expected to sign with a new club by the end of this month.

Wijnaldum is the more interesting target. Both Arsenal and Manchester United will be encouraged by the PSV Eindhoven midfield talisman's desire to test himself in a new league, per the Daily Star's Alex Harris:

"

I am happy at PSV but I am a player with a lot of ambition. I want to play in a stronger league than the Eredivisie.

With my quality I feel I can bring a lot to a team that I will join. I want to show it in the big leagues; England, Italy, Spain, Germany and France.

"

Arsenal should take advantage of Wijnaldum's wanderlust. The 24-year-old PSV skipper is a terrific talent. He's strong, energetic, smart and has a real eye for goal.

Wijnaldum has scored 12 times to spark PSV's march to this season's Dutch league title, per WhoScored.com. While most of the focus and plaudits go to winger Memphis Depay, Wijnaldum is the real key to the PSV team.

Ostensibly an attacking midfielder, he also has the attributes to thrive in a deeper role. Wijnaldum is a tireless runner with the frame and technique to make tackles and transition defence to attack.

Manager Arsene Wenger's Gunners could use a robust, box-to-box link player next to destructive holding midfielder Francis Coquelin. That would give Arsenal the right complementary balance in the middle.

But the Gunners are sure to face tough competition from United. The presence of former Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal could give the Red Devils the edge in any race for Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum would welcome the chance to work with Van Gaal again.

The player has indicated he'd be happy to work with his ex-international manager again, per Sky Sports' Pete Hall:

"

Of course I would like to work with him again. He is a good trainer, and makes players better. I work really fine with him and he is a great man.

He gave me a chance and opportunity to play in a World Cup after seven months out injured, and I am thankful for that. He helped me get my confidence back.

"

Yet despite the inside connection, Wijnaldum's potential place in the United midfield is not as obvious. Van Gaal already needs to accommodate advanced schemers such as Juan Mata and Angel Di Maria, as well as deeper playmakers Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick.

There's also the not-so small shape of supporting attacker Marouane Fellaini to consider. Midfield is the one position in Van Gaal's squad that doesn't need reinforcements.

If Wenger's smart, he'll move early to beat United to Wijnaldum, then reshape the Dutchman into the dynamic link player the Gunners need next to Coquelin.

Dybala's Future to be Decided by the End of this Month

Arsenal could miss out on Dybala after Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini revealed the Argentinian striker will sign with a new club by the end of April. Zamparini made the declaration via Italian publication Tuttosport (h/t Express reporter Joe Short): “Dybala will be sold by the end of April.”

Zamparini revealed how Juventus and AS Roma are the Serie A suitors for Dybala. But he also indicated Dybala's agent is travelling "between Paris and London" considering offers from abroad.

Express writer Izzy Horsefield recently reported claims from Zamparini that Juve are in "pole position." That needn't be a blow to Arsenal, despite Zamparini claiming the north London club has already made an offer, during an interview with Radio Marte (h/t MailOnline's Simon Jones).

The Gunners don't have an obvious need for Dybala, even though uncertainty surrounds the futures of several forwards. Lukas Podolski, Joel Campbell, Yaya Sanogo and Chuba Akpom are all out on loan. It remains to be seen how much any member of this quartet figures in Wenger's plans.

England international Theo Walcott is also in an apparent contract standoff with the Gunners. Yet Wenger has indicated he's confident the 26-year-old speedy wide-attacker will stay, per Chris Harris of the club's official site: "Every week he is getting better, he is very young and I believe he will have a great goalscoring record in the future because of the quality and intelligence of his game, and therefore I would like him to stay with our club."

Wenger is determined to keep Walcott.

Arsenal also boast natural centre-forward Olivier Giroud, versatile duo Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez, as well as wide attackers Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Serge Gnabry.

Adding another forward is close to the last thing Wenger needs to do ahead of next season, especially if he retains one of the four loanees. Arsenal's summer transfer kitty would be better spent on a goalkeeper, centre-back and flexible central midfielder.

That's why pursuing Wijnaldum makes more sense than bidding big for Dybala.
