Ohio State Football Recruiting Offers of the Week

David RegimbalApr 19, 2015

Head coach Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes football program had a fantastic week on the recruiting trail, collecting three times as many verbal commitments (six) than offers sent out to new prospects.

It started Wednesday with a commitment from Tristen Wallace, an outstanding 4-star dual-threat quarterback out of DeSoto, Texas. The spring game drew many of Ohio State's top targets to Columbus, and Meyer capitalized by securing an incredible five pledges for his 2016 and 2017 classes. That group was highlighted by 4-star linebacker Tuf Borland (2016) and a pair of 4-stars from the class of 2017 in Marcus Williamson (cornerback) and Todd Sibley (running back).

Here's an overview of whom the Buckeyes offered last week.

Joey Gatewood, Unranked Quarterback (2018)

Even when Braxton Miller, J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones leave Columbus, the Buckeyes will have loads of depth when the recently committed Wallace joins 4-star signal-callers Torrance Gibson and Joe Burrow

But Meyer is looking to stockpile more talent at the position, and evidence of that came when the staff offered 2018 prospect Joey Gatewood.

The 6'3", 206-pound dual-threat quarterback is only a freshman, but he already boasts offers from schools such as Florida, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, South Carolina and UCLA. And while he's still three years away from signing his national letter of intent, head coach Jimbo Fisher and the Seminoles are looking like the heavy favorites to land his commitment.

While splitting time at quarterback for Bartram Trail High School last year, Gatewood threw for 362 yards and three touchdowns and added 659 yards and six touchdowns on the ground, according to Tony Gerdeman of The Ozone.

Florida State currently holds the lead for Gatewood, but the Buckeyes have plenty of time—three years, in fact—to surge ahead.

Jack Wohlabaugh, 3-Star Offensive Guard (2016)

Ohio State's second offer of the week had an immediate impact as Jack Wohlabaugh—a 3-star offensive guard out of Stow, Ohio—offered his verbal commitment the moment Meyer gave him the good news.

The offer and commitment came hours before the Buckeyes kicked off their spring game Saturday, giving Ohio State its 11th member for the 2016 class.

Just two days before his big decision, Wohlabaugh told Jeremy Birmingham of Eleven Warriors that he'd have to deeply consider an offer from the Buckeyes.

"Ohio State is a great program," Wohlabaugh said, per Birmingham. "They've got a great staff who I've gotten to talk to frequently, and even better, it's in Ohio. Whatever decision I make, it'd definitely be an informed one. It's an offer I'd love to have, and I'd have to consider it deeply."

Considering it deeply only took a matter of moments.

Wohlabaugh is a bull-rushing guard who is an absolute terror as a run-blocker. He's strong enough to bury oncoming defenders, and he's quick enough to get to the second level or pull on zone-schemes—something Ohio State does regularly.

Wohlabaugh is ranked as the 30th-best guard nationally, but that should change as he continues to grow.
