Yasmany Tomas Recalled from Triple-A Reno by Diamondbacks

Adam WellsApr 15, 2015

After spending five games at Triple-A, Yasmany Tomas will join the Arizona Diamondbacks' 25-man roster prior to Wednesday's game against San Diego.

The Diamondbacks tweeted out the news of Tomas being recalled, which resulted in them sending down right-handed pitcher A.J. Schugel:

Tomas' status with the team has been the subject of much discussion since the end of spring training. Arizona sent him down to the minors just before the regular season started after giving him a $68.5 million contract in November.

Arizona general manager Dave Stewart told Steve Gilbert of MLB.com that the decision to send Tomas down was to find a position to get him consistent at-bats:

"

What we're trying to do is figure out a way to create at-bats for him, which is primarily the reason he didn't stay. If we had more at-bats and could get him more playing time, he'd be here. When he does come back here, we're planning on looking at him to give Jake [Lamb] a breather at third and then we know we've got our outfield positions, he may play some outfield.

"

With the Diamondbacks struggling to hit for power early in the season, entering Wednesday with just four home runs in eight games, they hope Tomas' presence will rectify that. However, Chris Murray of the Reno Gazette-Journal did note the early returns in Triple-A haven't been kind to the 24-year-old:

It's still early in the year and small-sample-size rules apply. The Diamondbacks signed Tomas to a big contract on the basis of his ability to hit. They play in a hitter-friendly park, so he can exploit that early in his career while adjusting to big league pitching.

Arizona's roster is a jumbled mess right now outside of Paul Goldschmidt. The team hopes Tomas can be a star on that level or at least close to it, so the front office is smart to see what he is capable of doing right now.
