Manchester United Transfer News: Sami Khedira Terms and Nathaniel Clyne Rumours

Rory MarsdenApr 15, 2015

It seems clear that Sami Khedira is on his way out of Real Madrid this summer, and Manchester United are now favourites to sign the defensive midfielder, reports Shaun Custis of The Sun.

The German World Cup winner has been linked with a variety of clubs in the past season. Arsenal has been a long-term suitor, per Sky Sports, with more recent reports suggesting Schalke were in the driving seat, according to Bild (h/t Sports Witness):

Khedira's contract at the Bernabeu is set to expire this summer. He has started only three La Liga matches this season, per WhoScored.com, and a renewal seems highly unlikely at this point.

The 28-year-old will leave Los Blancos for free in the summer, and according to Custis, he is ready to accept a £150,000-a-week deal to move to Old Trafford.

Liverpool had also been in for Khedira, but they look set to miss out on Champions League football next season, a huge blow as the Reds look to attract big-name players.

The Red Devils' good late-season form has all but guaranteed them a top-four Premier League finish, and they could place as high as second. Chelsea look to have wrapped up the title.

United boss Louis van Gaal will look to push on further next term, the Dutchman surely having ambitions to do well in Europe and genuinely compete for the title.

He will need to make a few additions this summer to fulfil said ambitions, and bringing Khedira in on a free transfer would be an astute piece of business. The former Stuttgart man is a Champions League winner and would bring huge experience and calm to United's squad.

Khedira could complement the 33-year-old Michael Carrick in the centre of midfield and provide further stability that United will need if they are to improve next season.

Hernandez to Be Used in Clyne Deal

Van Gaal is reportedly set to use out-of-favour-striker Javier Hernandez as a "sweetener" in order to snap up long-term target Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton this summer, per Alex Crook in the Mirror.

The 24-year-old England international is a top target for United as they look for a long-term solution at right-back. Winger Antonio Valencia has deputised in the position for much of the season.

Hernandez, a big favourite at Old Trafford as indicated by a recent London Evening Standard poll, has spent the 2014-15 term on loan at Real:

However, according to Crook, the Mexican forward has no future at United, and with Southampton keen on signing him up, Chicharito is set to be used in a player-plus-cash deal for Clyne.

Despite Chelsea also reportedly being interested, B/R UK's Sam Tighe sees United as Clyne's likely destination this summer:

Clyne is out of contract at St Mary's in 2016, and Saints boss Ronald Koeman recently admitted they would struggle to keep him in the summer, per Samuel Luckhurst in the Manchester Evening News

He is a huge talent and could be a stalwart of the United team for years to come.

Though the Red Devils defence has improved after a number of hiccups earlier in the season, added strength across the back line is needed, and Clyne could be a key addition to the squad in that respect as it goes for the title next season.
