Devon Modster to UCLA: Bruins Land 4-Star QB Prospect
One of the most highly coveted quarterbacks in the 2016 class found his home for the next four years Monday.
Four-star QB Devon Modster took to Twitter to announce his commitment to UCLA:
Modster is the No. 13 pro-style quarterback and the No. 334 player overall in 247Sports' composite rankings. He's also ranked 46th in the state of California.
The product of Tesoro High School in Rancho Santa Margarita kept it somewhat local in terms of interest. According to 247Sports, Modster had nine scholarship offers on the table. Of those nine schools, five came out of the Pac-12, while three called the Mountain West home.
It's not a big surprise that Modster ended up with the Bruins. He visited the UCLA campus March 7 and couldn't say enough good things about the school, per BruinReportOnline's David Woods:
"It was awesome. We sat down, looked at some film, and then took a tour of the campus, so it was really fun. Pretty much everything stood out. They're getting a lot of new stuff done. They're going to build a new facility, a new weight room, so you can just walk onto the field from the same level as the turf. They said the new facility would probably be done around the start of spring ball in 2017.
"
Although he's labeled as a pro-style quarterback, Modster possesses nice mobility. He can scramble out of the pocket to create more time for himself to throw.
Along with that mobility, Modster doesn't have much trouble throwing on the run. 247Sports' Barton Simmons posted a video of Modster moving to his right and delivering a pass on the money:
Modster is also comfortable in the pocket with his feet set. He has a strong arm and the vision to read the whole field.
Simmons again highlighted Modster's throwing ability, this time from more of a stationary position:
There will likely be some growing pains, especially as Modster learns to dial it down a little bit on his shorter throws.
The tools are all there for Modster to be a great college quarterback. His combination of athleticism and throwing ability meshes perfectly with what so many coaches are looking for in today's game.
