Twitter Reacts To Liverpool's Premier League Win Over Newcastle

Sean SwabyApr 13, 2015

Liverpool won a crucial Premier League match against Newcastle on Monday night at Anfield to keep a dominant home run against the Magpies alive and well.

"

Liverpool win their 24th PL match against NUFC, equalling Aston Villa as the opponent they have won most PL matches against.

But in the aftermath of the strong performance, much of the attention was on Liverpool's push for the top four. The result left them four points behind reeling Manchester City for fourth place.

"

Some stat from Sky there: Liverpool four points behind Man City now, after being 17 points behind them on New Year's Day.

While Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen were the goalscorers for Liverpool, Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho was the little-disputed star man of the game.

"

Coutinho the clear star there. Phenomenal movement, even better on the ball. When we have wide players who attack centrally, that ability >

Defender Dejan Lovren, on the other hand, was hammered for his performance in what has been a fairly miserable debut season with the club.

Sterling's contract dispute also managed to make its way into the conversation, as the 20-year-old missed a sitter that could have given him a brace.

Liverpool got off to a furious start which reached an apex with Sterling's early goal.

However, Newcastle had a pretty legitimate penalty shot that most seemed to agree was warranted.

"

Looked like a pen that for Newcastle. Lovren with a wild challenge. Referee doesn't give it.

"

Getting away with blatantly kicking a Newcastle player inside the box is arguably Dejan Lovren's best moment in a Liverpool shirt.

"

No no, you'll have to do better than be kicked in the knee to get a penalty off Lee Mason.

— Nick Miller (@NickMiller79) April 13, 2015"

One of the nicer moments of the match was when Newcastle's Jonas Gutierrez was given a standing ovation from the Kop as he entered. The Argentine recently returned to football after beating testicular cancer.

The reception Newcastle's Jonás Gutiérrez received when he came on as a sub at Anfield shows football still has a soul 👏👏👏

Mostly, though, Liverpool will be happy with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle.
