Match Preview

USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann has looked favourably toward MLS for the majority of his squad to face Mexico at the Alamodome.

The German legend has called up 13 players from the domestic league to fill the 22-man squad, per MLSsoccer.com.

Tottenham's DeAndre Yedlin will also make the trip from England, with Julian Green of Hamburg travelling from Germany.

Yedlin recently made his first appearance in Spurs colours since making the switch in the January transfer window, coming on as a substitute in his side's defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League.

However, two of USMNT's most experienced players will miss the match, with Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore out.

Dempsey recently sustained a hamstring injury, while Altidore serving a suspension for his red card against Switzerland last month, per MLS.

Klinsmann's team have suffered three defeats in the last five, with losses to the Republic of Ireland, Chile and Denmark.

Their Mexican opponents have been steady in recent months despite not playing their best football, and they scored a good victory away to the Netherlands in November, winning 3-2 with strikes from Javier Hernandez and Carlos Vela, who scored twice.

The 26-year-old Vela has continued to show fine form throughout the 2014-15 season with Real Sociedad, scoring seven times in his 17 appearances in La Liga.

But this friendly match will have an extra edge, with the game being played near a large Mexican community. Klinsmann sees the contest as a good opportunity for him to assess his options before the upcoming Gold Cup, giving him the chance to blood new talent, per USsoccer.com:

"

It’s different compared to how we were put together in Switzerland and in Denmark, and I see this kind of a game as a huge opportunity for players to come in and play in front of a sold-out stadium and loud crowd, a lot maybe pro-Mexico, but these are the games where you mature and where you try to express yourself and show what you have, and therefore we are thankful that we can play this game.

"

The Mexicans will want to make a statement in this fixture and continue their recent run of good results.

The emotions always run high between the two countries, and the team from south of the American border will want to prove their dominance in football.

USMNT struggled in their recent games in Europe, and it could be said they have not shown sufficient progress since the World Cup in Brazil. Results have shown the USA are still short of many of their European rivals, but Tim Howard said he believes USMNT will bounce back stronger.

However, games such as these are vital to test the productivity of the MLS, and to see if the home league is sufficient for the country's brightest young talent in their development.
